V70 D5 Tyres - Best for wear?
 

Hi Chaps,
Looks like my V70 D5 needs a set of fronts (surprise surprise!)

Can anyone recommend best value for money for heard wearing brand/type?
I see several for around the £55 mark (eg http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/sea...de=2254517WL2Z) but are these false economy?

I'm not too interested in sports car style roadholding as long as it stops (it's a big Volvo not a BMW!) and road noise is not too much of a concern, given the noise that comes off the diesel engine anyway!

I've noticed a lot of used Volvo's in the dealers have Pirelli P6000'S on them. Got them on mine at the minute, so i'll see what sort of life i get out of them. You could also try an 'extra load' Bridgestone tyre, they seem to be quite hard wearing.

These are my personal observations and only relate to my own vehicle. Hope it helps.

Pirelli 6000 is the OE tyre on the V70 - or at least it was when mine was new. The fronts on my car were shot before the first service at <12,000 miles.

Since then I have fitted Michelin and swapped the tyres front to rear and vice versa every 5000 miles. This evens out the tyre wear by preventing the fronts developing their normal uneven wear pattern and extends the life to between 20 and 25,000 miles.

As a bonus the tyre noise is reduced and the tram lining effect, characteristic of the V70, is also reduced.

Michelin 'aint the cheapest but I won't compromise on tyre quality for my personal safety and that of my passengers.

Not knowing what size you are running it is hard to say but I have a set of Toyo Proxes CF1s on mine (195/65/15) and I am chuffed to bits with them. Not exactly budget but certainly not top range but leaps and bounds ahead of the Goodyear NCTs I had fitted before. Wet weather handling is very good as is dry and they seem to be wearing nicely, not that I have done more than 3000 miles yet. Would recommend. £114 fitted, balanced etc so would fit your budget.

I have run Continental Contact 3 as they had wheel protectors but only covered 21,753 miles on front wheels. This is with mostly dual carriageway in 12 month period.

These are a soft compound and hence will wear more rapidly. Expected mid to high 20's so after much research have chosen the Good Year F1 and so far have covered 5000 miles, and have been very impressed with performance, wear, handling, low noise etc.

Have just changed P6000's from rear to front so I can wear these out more quickly and will have Good Year all round. Cost £117 each, can buy from Black Circles and Tyre Shopper on line for few £'S less.

I am running 225/45R17 XL 94Y. Important to select this higher speed rating as lower speed tyres don't have the same level of rim protection, so kerbing wheels much lower chance.

Interesting to read about the wear but I am looking to get a better ride
as well for my wife who has slight pelvis problem any idea's please

Are you running 16" or 17" (or even 18") rims? 16's will give an improved ride given the higher sidewall depth.


After dumping the ditchfinders my V70 came with when I bought it, I moved onto Goodyear Eagle F1's and then Excellence. Both recommended but became a bit too pricey. After another recommendation I bought a full set of Neuton NT5000's. Just under £250 delivered from Neo Bros ebay shop (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Neo-Brother...=p4634.c0.m322). These were 225/45/ZR17 94W XL and cost me £36 to have them fitted, albeit at the same time I had a set of 4 wheels refurbished. The tread wear rating is 320 which is high (iirc the F1's were 240). From my records these have done 8,900 miles to date and were taken off for winter storage 2 weeks ago. They have worn 1-1.5mm evenly front and rear. After a bit of wearing in, they have proved just as good at the F1's or the Excellence in all weather and just as good for grip when "making progress" on the twisty bits when the conditions and traffic allow. Road noise is no worse than the other tyres and the ride is fine (although I'm running lowered and stiffend suspension so these are very personal opinions). I run my tyres at 34psi front and rear.

Running Mohawk's on my T5, about half worn now after 10k. good grip in wet and dry and ok in snow. £64 each at the local tyre fitters. more than happy with them
