ETM on 2001 V70
 

Hello,

Now I'm getting worried...having got my 2001 V70 (99K) 2.4 140bhp I am reading horror stories about this ETM issue.

So far the car runs beautifully, idles perfectly, no problem accelerating etc. However, once (only once) it shot up to 1500 on idle. Is this a sign of things to come - I drive to Austria next week and am starting to think bad things.

However, if I hadn't read this forum I wouldn't think that I had a thing to worry about -'too much knowledge is a bad thing' springs to mind......

If this is going to fail, does it do so without warning, or will I get some indication prior?

I was like you just after I bought mine 4 years ago and have been waiting for the event ever since. I had the "free clean" done at the local Volvo dealer 2 years ago and all went well till just before Christmas 2011 - odometer reading 114k miles.
When the orange engine management light came on the car still drove perfectly normally - no dramatic limp home that so many others have suffered - no prior symptoms at all.

Went to my local independent garage who read the codes and told me I'd have to go to Volvo or a Volvo specialist as their machine couldn't give a specific code reading. Their machine said "Internal ETM fault".

The local Volvo independent couldn't fit me in for 3 weeks (i.e. in early January) so it had to be the local Volvo garage. They read out 2 fault codes, either ETM or Lambda sensor. They started by clearing the codes and reloading latest software (£35) as I had no other symptoms suggesting major expense!
Drove fine for a few hours but then the light came on again so next day they changed the ETM (£ £440 all in).

Again drove fine for a few hours but the light came on yet again so the following day they replaced the lambda sensor (£256 all in).

So, it's cost me £700 but it had to be done as I needed it over Christmas, and at least I know that that fault won't appear again! Also, I love the car and know why I bought it. It's sad that Volvo (Ford?) created this problem by going for cheap parts and then denying it outside the US but it is still a superb car to own and drive.

It will happen to you one day, probably within the next 20k miles, but you won't necessarily have a drama - mine was quite a "polite" failure.

Wouldn't overly worry about it tbh...it generally will give signs of unstable idle/cutting out etc before it goes belly up completely.
You could have a look at it and see if it needs a clean (the butterfly area) but that's about it.
Mines still on the original ETM at 102k and showing no signs of misbehaving yet...and greater mileages have been achieved. (but they do fail eventually)
I'd be inclined to leave the beggar alone if you haven't got any obvious signs of trouble.

I wouldn't worry about this at all. This happened to mine recently - I fixed it properly with a replcement contactless sensor.

Transformed the car and was done for less than a tank of Petrol!

I have the sensors available, so if it gets worse let me know and I'll sort you out with one.

For the record my V70 has done 195,000miles it used to do mainly motorway which means the throttle didn't wear out as fast, I know of school run mum cars getting less than 100,000 due to increased throttle use.

Sorry to start this thread again.

I have the above symptons and unstable idle, nothing too chronic at this stage.

I am assuming that after 100K miles the ETM is suffering from the resistor wear problem.

Does anyone know if error code P1011 is associated with the ETM which in turn enables the engine management light.

I seem to be having problems with the ETM and thus far have cleaned it out but not had the software upgrade yet.
basically on idle it seems to hunt slightly and have been told that it is probably the throttle control!
Forgive my ingnorance but the Throttle body that i cleaned out i believe is connected to the ETM is this right and if so is this the same part you are talking about, this contactless sensor?

Get a fault code reader hooked up to the car before you start throwing money at it, the ETM is frail and could be on it's way out but the fault could be down to a whole host of other reasons (air leak on the inlet manifold/ associated pipework, Throttle pedal position transmitter etc).

As you know how to take the ETM off the car I would suggest you contact the chap who can repair them (as he is local-ish) see Here - Mike
