Brand new XC60 - stone chip already!
 

I don't know how it happened but my lovely new saville grey XC60 has a chip in the driver door. Right down to the metal. Am really gutted. I've rubbed some wax in the chip whilst I decide what to do (I thought this would prevent any rust). Options are

(a) Leave it
(b) Get some dark coloured wax and put that in the hole every few weeks - am pretty sure it will be invisible if I do that.
(c) Get one of these mobile scratch/chip repair guys out
(d) Get the dealer to repair

Chip is about 2mm by 4mm but in a very visible place next to the door handle. If the car wasn't so new or if it wasn't down to the metal I wouldn't be so bothered but am worried that it will rust if left untreated and that I should deal with it now rather than later.

Any thoughts/warnings/advice appreciated. My local Halfords arranges chip/scratch repairs from £60+ using a local mobile firm. Worth the risk or should I stick with Volvo dealer? Am more concerned about getting a good job than the cost. I just wondered if a specialist guy might be better at this job that a dealer?

Must be to do with saville grey!!! I have a new xc90 in saville (great colour for a car) and I noticed two, inch long scratches above the rear passeger door (white so deep). god only knows how they got there and I wonder if they were there prior to me getting the car.

I am also gutted - I was looking to see if volvo do a saville grey touch up paint, I'm sure they must do but not found out yet as I only noticed the scratch on Saturday!

Volvo reckon about £100 to repair. I was worried about respraying being noticeable and hoped they could just fill the chip with paint and polish down. But they say all paint is sprayed on nowadays and so it would involve some spraying, but that if I noticed it in any way it would not be a proper repair.

Could you guys post some pics of your cars as am looking at getting either black or grey for my xc60 and have seen pics of a black one but would like to see a grey one . Thanks .

if it was me id mask off the chip very tightly dip a very fine paint brush with the said grey on it do a couple of layers, finish it off with some gloss nail varnish and make it level with a smooth fabric type nail polish and then wax the area

This does look slightly darker then it actually is. Hope this helps.

I will try and post later but to be honest the colour changes depending upon the weather. Saville grey is great for hiding dirt. The car can go unwashed for weeks and still look good. My old black car needed washing all the time. I saw saville grey in the showroom and it looked really close to black to me. But outside it is definitely much lighter than black. On a dull day it looks almost a green grey and matt but on a sunny day it sparkles and looks more straight grey. If you look on the volvo website believe it or not the 360 viewer is a good match to the colour in the flesh. But I would advise going to see a car for real before deciding, nothing beats seeing close up. My dealer just called me when they had a car in and I went down to take a look.

The car is only a few months old and cost me over £35K. For the sake of a few quid I would rather a perfect repair as the chip is in a prominent position. Has anyone else had a chip repaired by a Volvo dealer? Like I say I am worried about the fact it goes down to the metal.

Well if thats the case dont be a tight wad and phone up a scratch / body work specialist to sort it! but Ive done the above before on more expensive cars than yours and the finished result is deffinitly up there with the best

hair line scratches are the hard ones
