What I'm looking for is any advice, help, ideas about my forthcoming acqusition (apart from shares in Shell!!!!). Also does anyone have any photocopies of any original Volvo literature regarding the 850R it would be most appreiciated

Since you're not being specific, a search using the keywords R and any particular area would be very helpful to you.

Also try the 850 forum.

Regarding literature, there is some on ebay UK and a post on the wanted forum might also prove useful.

Common R questions are related to performance improvements - personally, I would leave uncoordinated upgrades well alone unless sorted by Volvo tuning specialists.

They will also have horrendous impacts on your insurance premiums - even simple things like strut braces and air filters can make an unpleasant difference.

However the strut brace is something I would recommend - cheap and easy to fit and very effective.

Also check the threads for "pollen filter" - this is an essential and non-standard element of your ECC.

I hope your R isn't as thirsty as mine - or you will have to buy Shell shares.

Most important is a service history! These are well made cars that will last if looked after properly-or break the bank if not.
Try to get someone to follow on a test drive and get the car fully warm. then idle for a short time (1min) then set off again-if there is a puff of smoke from the exhaust the turbo might be on its last legs!
Oil around the spark plug cover isn't much to wory about as long as it isn't excessive and check the tyres-they cost over £100 each for good ones and don't use cheap rubber-it will send you through the nearest hedge!
Buy a standard car if you can-modified cars are done so because the owners like to drive-HARD, then you can modify as and when you like.
Personally I wouldn't buy ex-police but know many happy owners of these vehicles and they are good value for money!

hi Fraser/Simon

It has done 100k and has a full Volvo dealer history , its fully standard and is is great condition, the engine looks like new!!!. It has a only has a couple of bumper scuffs that show its age, are the black(grey) bumper tops replaceable??? I also know who the last owner was and I doubt very much that it has been driven hard at all....

Is there a CD head unit available to replace the tape head unit that is fitted at the moment??

When is the next Crooked Billet meet-up ???

Martin,

If you would like more information about the VOC Performance Car Section calendar of events, then check out my website <www.t5r.org> which I use as a bulletin board for the sectional information.

The next meeting of the section is on the 18th, at Santa Pod raceway - the "Redline Rumble".

If you would like any further information, dont hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

Phil :-)
