Black smoke on acceleration
 

My 2002 V70 D5 SE Auto with 145k miles suffers from black exhaust smoke when accelerating after cruising. The problem has existed from new and the dealer fitted two complete sets of replacement injectors in the first 18 months, but the problem always swiftly returned. Once the black smoke is blasted away, the exhaust is clear until the next spell of cruising. It doesn't smoke when cold. Any ideas? With winter nights coming, I am embarrassed by the effect on following traffic.

After how long a spell of crusing? Diesles need revved out regularly, if its after 10 -20 miles crusing i'd be concerned, if its after 200 miles i wouldnt be, that said, black smoke = unburnt fuel, maybe a ecu remap? blocked fuel filters + air filters would cause the same problems too

Split intercooler or intake hose will also cause black smoke. a D5 will smoke on heavy accelaration when there is a air leak in system

On older types black smoke can be attributed to injectors. Mine have to be checked/serviced at 60,000 miles and replaced at 120,000 miles. The seatings on the electrically operated injectors in your car may be starting to leak a little so check the tightness of attaching bolt(s) and security of tubing to ECU.

Thanks for the advice. Bearing in mind that it has been with the car since new, it seems probable that there is an air leak. I will get my local garage to inspect and rectify. Volvo in Maidstone have never suggested this cause, which is worrying.

If you have never had the intercooler replaced , It's odds on that this is split causing your problem ...

Mine has done 110,000 miles andc smokes under heavy acceleration, even though i do very little town driving. Could it be tired injectors (performance and fuel consumption seem OK) or worn turbo - excess clearance limiting maximum boost and thus over-fuelling?

Check the tray under the condensor/radiator/intercooler to see if its got a puddle of oil, my intercooler has just given up and a nice puddle of oil welcomed me this morning (the tray fills up while your driving then drips through the drain holes when you park up....good times!

My 52 plate D5 V70 Auto had the same black smoke problem. Turned out to be a split intercooler radiator problem. About 80k on the clock. Local Volvo specialist reckons it's a common problem. Fuel consumption was poor too. Repair was around £350 ish. Should feel the air escaping from the split when the engine is rev'd up. Might hear a whistle (outside) too.

Car has now done 99500 miles and it looks like it now has the dreaded Injector problem with poor starting.

However, fantastic car, brilliant comfort, fuel consumption, ride and great engine..so I will be keeping the car....for now.

Possibly an injector , but each is available separatly now , no need to change all 5 you may have one or two faulty but not all of them ...
