Real world mpg vs computed mpg - 205 D5

I don’t want to start a mpg discussion as I’m sure there’s plenty, although I couldn’t really find what I wanted in a search.

I’ve had a couple of P2 euro 3 Manual D5’s which returned silly mpg figures of 50 ish or better on a good run.

My current D5 (205) auto (2wd) is showing 31.9 Mpg (UK) on the computer with mixed driving with a good bit of motorway/ fast A road stretches, all driven at the legal limit As a maximum and not faster. Wondering if this figure is reasonable for this engine/gearbox configuration. I’ve given the car a good service and other work since I bought it, although there is some old oil down the back of the engine that I still need to investigate.

Not in the slightest worried if this is the ballpark figure for this car as I don’t do huge mileage, was actually looking for a petrol but this was such a good spec I couldn’t resist.

Been debating putting a polestar map on it (cheap offer in trader section) but won’t consider that if I’ve a sign of something unhealthy).

Vida shows no issues relating to the engine or drivetrain.

Is the dash computer as woefully over optimistic as the P2 cars (about 10% at best). I’m currently working through a tank of fuel to see what it’s actually using.

I have a similar vehicle (79000) and get a reading of about 37mpg on mixed driving but this can drop to lower 30's if I am on predominently local type driving. I drive down to Devon which is mostly A14/M5/A30 fairly regularly (pre- Covid) and record about 42-44 at a steady 75. Like you, I had a D5 185 manual previously that would record up to 50 on the Devon run and about 41-42 bimbling about. All this is, of course, a world away from the reality measured fill to fill so I avoid doing that. Life is depressing enough

Can't advise on mpg as it doesn't interest me and I don't bother monitoring it but I can recommend the Polestar upgrade if you can get a good deal on it. It doesn't turn your Volvo into a Koenigsegg but on my 2013 215bhp XC70 it gave me an extra 15 bhp and attendant torque which transformed the car. Not that I'm a boy racer but if required it can now surprise BMW drivers who tend to see it as a sort of lumbering Scandinavian furniture van. It is now definitely not!

No use for D5 figures but my 2.5T petrol gives me roughly the same number as you overall.

Went down to Devon two weeks ago via A303 and got 34.9 mpg, very happy considering moderate traffic, some spirited sections and pushing hard down Devon lanes at the end. Incidentally, I filled up before leaving with the DIM reporting range of 440 miles; when I parked up in Devon, it said 435 miles...

On the way back last weekend, got 32.2 mpg and the A303 was at a standstill/crawling along for two hours.

So count me as surprised to hear a D5 is giving you apparently worse MPG than my petrol, although I'm hardly experienced in these matters.

Car is a 2005 S60 manual.

Motoring around the Cotswolds hills back on my own patch, I usually end up with 28mpg - 32mpg after a run of 30 miles+, usually including some very hard sections. I've no doubt that in motorway driving my petrol would make 35mpg - 40mpg.

Exactly the same as yours. Predominantly local journeys at the hands of my (leaden-footed) wife.

Polestar @ £350.....bargain in my eyes.
Give them a ring as usually you can try it......payment upfront and I think 14 days ? Not sure if they charge for removing it...best ask.....and don't expect better mpg with it on.....Probably worse as the loud pedal seems to get hold of you...

Carlisle - look in the traders section. It’s 120 miles away from me, and a lot more from you 😂

Or just clicky on this link https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=308247

+1 for polestar! Great improvement ( fun).
Bigger question is do you have a dpf? I went from S80 to newer S60 and the mpg plummeted! Quite a shock!. Polestar doesn't help but you will smile more!!

The general noise of the 205 engine compared with my last euro 3 D5 also doesn’t help, although trying to be sensible to get an idea of what it’s returning.
