Battery gas widget

Hello,

Ive just had my V70 2.4D battery out for the first time ever, bemused at first as I couldn't find it! In the boot, who knew?

Anyway there's tube on the side of the battery that presumibly takes gas from the battery. The little L shaped plastic hollow tube part is broken. Being the ace mechanic I am I've got no idea what it's called, rendering Google useless. Can someone help me please?

Its usually described as a battery vent. During charging, lead/acid batteries give off tiny amounts of hydrogen gas. This device and pipe diverts it safely away from the possibility of it concentrating in any one area. Although, you would have to seriously overcharge the battery for a significant volume of gas to be generated that would be dangerous. Can see the point if the battery is in an enclosed space such as a boot, but not under the bonnet.
