SU carbeuretors

When taking my 164automatic out of gear the revs can rise significantly which to me would suggest that it is running lean, though one would expect some increase in revs but it is more than one would expect. The standard Strombergs carbeuretors are not adjustable, it has been suggested that tunable SU carbeuretors would be a better alternative, has anyone any comments

It is probably the idle speed a little too high , should be 900 rpm if my 45 year old memory is still ok :-) just tweek each idle speed screw the same amount .

Idle speed is adjustment and fine while in gear but rises when out of gear

When in gear the engine is having to turn the gears and pump in the box so it slows down. Opposite when out of gear. Carbs need to be in good order to get the engine to tick over slowly and smoothly. With an auto, it will always be a compromise when you have carbs. You'll just have to try and get a smooth and reliable tick over as low as possible when out of gear but one that doesn't make the engine stall when you put in gear. A good compromise gives you a very slow creep when in traffic, so you just use a gentle touch on the brake to do the stops and starts.

I should have said that idle speed should be 900 rpm in Neutral . Your car is behaving normally , the only question is the idle speed in N ... It might well be all correct .

During the 1990s I switched the two Stromberg Carbs on my Auto 164 to a spare set of twin SUs.

No modifications required and the engine ran well.

Induction roar was definitively louder.....
