timing belt

i'm getting a bit nervous, the receipt says my timing belt, tensioner and water pump were changed (all volvo parts) about 20k ago, thing is it was seven years ago.

i'm planing to purchase genuine volvo belt and tensioner and have a backstreet garage install it. any ideas of the hours it takes to change?

cheers ..... john

timing

according to this thread you should be okay for at least 50,000 miles yet......http://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-x...autions-15171/ not sure about whether the years its been on should be taken into account....i suppose you could take the timing cover off to see if there are any signs of wear/cracking.regards....

About half a day if they know what they are doing lib,it's more awkward than hard. And they say every 5 years to change it regardless of low mileage,or if youre racking up high mileage then change it and recommended intervals.

yeah i thought it was every six years regardless of mileage. cheers chaps ... john

cheers kieran, just had a look at the receipt, it was changed march 2009 so five and a half years (that's good news), just over 20k on the belt. just had the cover off and it looks perfect but i know its got to be changed. i might give it a go myself. i've changed the alternator and aux belt so i know how to get to the timing belt (crank shaft pulley). engine mount removal looks straightfoward. i guess if i can get everything lined up and put in the locking pin i should preserve the timing.

That's the key getting the timing right ;) make a mistake and youre engine is wrecked :( but apparently it's an easy job to do its just tricky as hell on our x40's by all accounts due to the room you have to work in.

It's a job I've always wanted to learn to do I know I could aswell but it frightens me so I leave it to the garage :(,but you could save a fortune.

its just getting that locking pin in the right hole....first attempt i broke the locking pin and it went into the sump:broken_heart:(must of been made of butter).....went to my local engineer and he made me a steel pin up 8mm diameter no longer than 6.5"(see picture)and finally got it in ....and this is were the pin goes(follow garden cane picture).....see biotoxics guide ......http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...=121836....the hardest part i found was re-aligning the engine mount.....good luck

cheers neanderthal, i was thinking of using an 8mm drill bit? thanks for showing where the pin goes, very helpful.

thanks again ... john
