Prop loose

Hi again all i know this has prob already been coverd but im starting to loose the will with this car towing my cattering trailer this weekend and now have a nasty rettle noise and just put it up on a ramp and found the prop at front where it meets gearbox/transferbox not sure is loose and i need clarification on what i need to replace and how to go about it thanks its a 2005 d5 on 133000miles ...

If the whole flange coming our of the transfer box has play/movement then you need to replace the transfer box. Not wise to drive the car until this is sorted - the bearings have failed. Probably 4-5 hours labour, o/s driveshaft has to be removed as well as a few other parts.

If the prop is lose (has up/down or side to side movement) in it's own flange (i.e. shaft moves but flange with bolts on does not) then the propshaft joint has failed - there are two types and fairly cheap.

Both are almost unusual but not unheard of faults.

Nope... not if it's the transfer box or prop joint.

Best thing there is get the codes read.

Had codes read in diffrent post just hoping it was linked as wondering if car is worth fixing or if one fault has caused another as on a budjet and need car to tow my catering trailer and need it reliable. so looks like i need new transsfer box and DEM plus gearbox service and knowing my luck the transfer box sleeve will need doing aswell.
This is codes i have with and then without the DEM plugged in
tested again today cleared all codes
Then read codes and got
0094 com probs with activ on demand couplings.
1a54 om rem signal missing
1a64 com with DEM signal missing
0004 tyre preasure siren com fault.
4f43 parking sensor 2 faulty

Then i unplugged dem cleared codes and read again and got
0094
1a64
0004
4f43
Need help in where to look nxt thanks.

Hi, not sure if this helps, but for budgetary calculation, you should be able to get a. replacement transfer box for about £400, uprated spline sleeve if needed £140. New siren module £150, labour from Indi about £300 ( mine was for fitting transfer box, sleeve and oil).

If there is gearbox problems, prob at least another £2000, but discount labour on transfer box and sleeve.

As they get older, xc90 do not get cheaper to repair, but you have to factor in a cost to replace and if you like the car...

The alarm will have a failed battery that you can replace yourself but you need to remove unit, cut it open and replace the battery. This may or may not fix the problem, but I chose to replace mine with new. This is an easy replacement and the new kit has all the parts and instructions..

Good luck and I hope this helps. John l

Hi Tannaton, I’m new here but hoping for a bit of help following your post about prop flange. I’ve noticed as what can be described as someone running a stick along railings nice, mechanic thinks it’s to do with where the front and back prop shafts meet but cost of new total prop shaft is quiet hefty.

In your post you mention prop shaft joint and wonder if this is the same item and where I can purchase?

Any help would be great, aside from this problem my 2004 XC90 is going well and I’m really loathe to change her.

Hello ordered a used transferbox today and getting new sleeve gear so planning on rebuilding on fri just got couple of questions

How much if any play/movemet should there be in prop flange that meets transferbox.

Should the gearbox end of driveshaft be a dry joint or should this be greased if so what grease ie will cv grease work. Mine looks very rusty...

Dose transfer box take same oil as gear box.

Thanks anyone that cam help.
