1990 240 non start
 

Two days ago car suddenly wouldn't start - checked diagnostic - all 1-1-1 - checked fuses 4 & 6 - replaced fuse 4 - all OK
Today car wouldn't start again - checked diagnostic - this time got 1-3-1 (engine RPM signal missing) and 2-1-4 (speed sender signal missing or sender faulty)
As far as I can judge this is the crank position sensor - Is that correct ?
If so where is this located (Haynes doesn't say) ?
Any help would be much appreciated

The CPS is on the bellhousing I think, see here:

The CPS can start to give trouble after 90k miles, but even in the tight space between engine and firewall I found it quite easy to change. You only get them from Volvo, if I remember right for around 30 pounds.

The bolt can be rusted tight, and the housing the CPS sits in is very fragile. If you break it, it needs the gearbox off to replace. Advice is to soak in PlusGas the night before. That said, mine was loose!

I decided to remove the offending article ready for the replacement (mail order)
Before "attacking" the unit on the bellhousing I released(freed) the cable from its routing and disengaged the plug.
I noticed 2 things -
1) the cable had a cut lengthwise in the outer and first inner cable - obviously rubbing against the engine lifting eye I presume.
2) the plug had some minor corrosion on the female terminals.
I cleaned all connections, bound up the split(s)- reassembled and hey presto the engine ran perfectly.
