Engine System Service Urgent - 4th Gear Limp - EGR Clean

Hi All,

Hoping someone can shed some light on this. Basically the V70 D5 2008, I own was have a strange fit every so often when going from 3rd to 4th mainly when going up a hill if I recall. Almost like the car lost power/push further on throttle and nothing happened.

Admittedly the car has got 130k on the clock but it was all motorway mileage mainly to my knowledge.

I took the chance to clean the pipes out going to the EGR and throttle body today, it was full of thick crud! I didn't remove the unit just the pipes and throttle body flap. Cleaned all up the best I could and cleaned the EGR unit in situ best I could. With the plan to remove at a later date to clean thoroughly.

However first drive I thought, there was a small noticeable difference in driving I thought. Did my days work driving around and then was doing 70mph nicely along some dual track. Slowed down and Turned at a roundabout with momentum still in 3rd, slightly hill. Went to about 3k to 3.5k on rev meter then changed to fourth, power was gone again!! Pushed my foot harder on accerlaerator to see it wasn't me being silly, but then *bing* engine system service urgent message came up on the dash and car went into limp mode!!

Drove for 3 miles in limp mode, stopped turned off car and then started again, still in limp mode. Then proceeded to a fuel station as I did need fuel, filled up with £50. Car no longer in limp mode but still had message, drove 2 miles and message also went. Strange! Any ideas?

What is faulty? Do I need to do further cleaning? I want to get this fixed.

Had the same thing - egr valve changed and unit as well as turbo looks like it's sorted
However speaking to a Saab dealer ( wife has a Saab ) he mentioned that there is an update for the fuel management system which is linked to certain models - certain dealers haven't done - off to another dealer to check as if they had done this it would have saved me money

Well I'm not replacing the unit. Just cleaning it.

So I cleaned most of it today again to ensure I hadn't missed anything. And so it's spotless now... However I still had a slight delay reaction in 4th on accelerator pedal when going, almost like it wasn't giving any power no matter how hard I pushed. Any suggestions?

I'm yet to change the fuel filter just for piece of mind so I know it's definitely been changed. But I can't see how that would cause my problem but I might be wrong.

I was about to suggest fuel filter...

From my various readings (and please note, no practical experience in these particular matters!) it seems that the fuel filter is the first port of call, as it can cause all manner of things to happen downstream if the fuel supply is restricted.

My D5 205 ps had similar symptoms but at a much lower mileage and it was a failed temperature sensor on the DPF system.

A friend of mine arrived yesterday evening with a "customer's" car, he is the Service Manager of a local main dealer (no names) anyway he explained why he had the car, the temperature sensor on the DPF system had been defective and the car had been permanently in limp mode. The sensor had been replaced and he was "testing" the car but get this it only had 250 miles on the clock - yes only 250 miles and the temperature sensor had failed!!!! It is great having all this technology until one item fails and the car goes into limp mode and becomes useless. Not a very good advert for that particular manufacturer - it wasn't a Volvo but they do share common parts.
