ETM dirty or failing??
Sorry if this has been covered:
Just purchased a 2001 V70 2.4T It hunts at idle between 800 - 1200ish rpm consistently every 3-4 seconds I have no warning lights etc. (though have only done 100 miles so maybe they have been cleared before purchase...?) My first thought is to remove and clean the ETM as I have seen on a couple of youtube videos. My questions: 1. Is a failing/dirty ETM the ONLY/MOST LIKELY explanation for the symptoms? 2. Is cleaning the ETM likely to prolong its life, or do they fail regardless? |
for anyone that is interested:
I cleaned the ETM with a bit of carb cleaner and now it purrs at 800/850 without a blip! I'm have done odd jobs in the past and had a few old cars but I am still very amateur and a bit slap-dash and I found it took me around 2 hours without rushing at all. -remember to take plenty of pictures -buy a replacement gasket -buy some small cable ties to re attach the wiring conduit -count how many plugs you disconnect (i didn't so had to spend a few minutes checking there was nothing loose!) -be careful of damaging the radiator! Mine had a white sticker on it - doesn't that mean its the original? as the mileage is 127Kish this seems to have lasted a good while! I will probably look at going contactless when it starts to go, and I am happy that I can get to the unit and I have an solder-compatible freind who will do the magic bits for me! Ben |
just 1 more thing:
make sure you tigten the pipe to the etm properly afterwards - tempting to not give it everything it as it is in an awkward place. I tried giving it some power a week later and it popped off, car was useless until replaced. Ben |
