Tappet adjustment

Having watched the amazon video I find that method quite awkward.Remembering which part of the sequence you are at. My method is setting number one cylinder at TDC.with dizy rotor pointing to7 o clock or thereabouts,The valves are closed so I adjust the tappets on no,1. Turn the engine so that the rotor moves 90* that should be TDC no. 3 cylinder and adjust. Further 90* gives no,4 tdc and further 90* gives no,2 TDC .B16 clockwise, reverse for B18-20. Is there any problem that you can see with this?
B16 dizy rotor turns clockwise, B18-20. rotates anticlockwise.

I haven’t seen the Amazon video. But I adjust tappets on the Volvo B16 using the rule of 9.

I have run a wire up the firewall from the starter, then clip on a remote start button so I can bump over the engine. Can do 2 valves per engine bump.

So when #3 is open, adjust #6. When #1 is open, adjust #8. Fast, takes about 10 minutes or less.

OK, I watched the Amazon video and he also adjusts using the rule of 9. Quite easy, really, once you get used to it.

By the time i get half way through the rule of nine I usually forget exactly where I am and have to start again. Probably a "senior" thing

LOL. Just write the number combos down and tick them off as you go. It's a good idea to measure the gaps and write them down before you adjust that valve. You may not need to do it, especially the inlet ones. Seat recession on the exhaust side will reduce the clearance and measuring the clearance before hand will give you a warning that this is happening.
Even with new valves and lead free seats this is still a good habit to get into.

A tip: If you take off the rocker gear, put an accurate straight edge along the top of the valve tips. In theory they should all touch the straight edge with no clearance. Small discrepancies are why you are adjusting the clearances. However. if any of the exhaust valves are obviously higher you are likely suffering seat recession on those valves. Monitor or remedy, your choice.

My initial question was ,is there any thing wrong with the way I do it? I think that it achieves the same result. Both valves closed at TDC

I have no criticisms. :teeth_smile::teeth_smile:
