CV joint grease
 

Hi as part of changing track control arms, ball joints etc ok my 2005 V70 petrol 2WD auto I need to change the inner and outer CV boots on the off side driveshaft.... The long one

I got the boots from Volvo

I notice that the (Ford) grease in the kit is different for the inner and outer... And with the inner there are two packets of G - PS grease

So I assume it's different type to suit the UK style tripod (which helpfully is different from my earlier V70 on that the 3 needle roller ends are held in place and don't have a tendency to drop all over the floor if you're not careful!)

I want to grease up the CV joint and UJ on the near side too when I do the work on that side....I have a tub of lith-moly though not sure I should use this application for the tripod.....

Good luck with finding any tripod grease!I pulled apart the tripod joint of a driveshaft on my XC70 when changing a control arm. No problem I thought, I'll get some appropriate grease and pop it back together. Re-assembly was easy but non of the local motor factors stocked the grease and,when I asked at several garages what they used for repacking inner joints they all answered 'CV grease' so in the end thats what I used. You can get tripod grease online(fleabay) but there seem to be very few places that sell it and it seems surprisingly expensive!

Just seen you have a CV kit with different greases for inner and outer so use those by all means, you'll probably find the inner tripod 'grease' much more like a thick oil rather than a normal grease something to do with the different demands of the bearing surfaces in the tripod joint.

Try looking for landrover one shot grease. It is used instead of oil on the front swivel of live axil models. The swivel houses a constant velocity joint as well as the swivel bearings .
It's been effective for over 200 know miles on my discovery and I would use it without hesitation on any cv joint.

My V70 is a Ford era... So though I've never bought anything from the dealer before with Ford written on it (and I do buy maybe 70% of parts from them still) it's not a surprise

I looked it up online and it seems you can buy it from Ford.... The online thingy asked for car details....I obviously don't know what to put in!! I might just phone Ford.... It's bound to be cheaper than asking Volvo!!

Though using the gkn bellows part number did bring up mainly returns for Ford models.... And they're not as cheap as I'd have thought

Or yeah I'll just try a decent motor factors

In the past before I knew this I just used lith-moly!!

Ps.... And Land Rover at one point was also made by Ford wasn't it??

A few places online sold one shot grease which they said was for inner and outer joints

I did think about using LM but I've used lith moly before.... So there you go

Now.... because I had to split both shafts as I couldn't get out the inner bearing cups....or whatever you call them.... I'm faced with putting on a CV boot band in situ

The nearside one was ok.... There was just room to get the CV band pliers up there

But the offside is so restricted for space I can't get the pliers in

I've seen CV boot pliers that operate sideways using a ratchet.... So you can torque the CV band

It looks as if it will fit in the space.... But it's just more money!!

Any comments on that tool or other suggestions......???

Cable ties.

I don't think personally that cable ties are the way forward

A jubilee clip maybe?

What makes you think that? :regular_smile: ford parts cost more than volvo thats why the ford people come into a volvo parts dept . eg a set of tail lights for a mondeo MK5 is £1400 + VAT no doubt .

I have had no issues with cable ties over the years. Obviously they need to be "man enough" to do the job, don't just use thin ones.
