Oil Consumption - NOT Solved - still burning oil - Thought?!

I recently have done a post around engine Issue that I have had with my Volvo D5 2.4 185BHP which is covered just over 180,000 miles with a full-service history. After extensive reading, I decided that my turbo was failing and it needed to be replaced. So I went ahead and replace the turbo. Once removed, it was clear that the turbo (although not failing) was in poor condition as there was excessive play in the bearing. So I replace the turbo and reconnected and drove 500 miles to Scotland with my family and the car didn’t use any oil, or use very little oil, and drove beautifully. It pulls great and the smoke is out of keeping with the engine's performance. Now in Scotland, doing lots of short runs, we are starting to see oil being used. We are also intermittently saying the burning of something through the exhaust. For information, with my turbo replacement I did the following work: 1) PCV check, clean and reassemble. 2) EGR and intake pipework check, clean and reassemble. 3) Oil engine flush. 4) VIDA compression test - all constant and balanced and bang on. 5) VIDA injector test - all constant and balanced and bang on. Current symptoms So currently, the car drives beautifully with no smoke until I am either consistently Rev the engine (which is something I am doing quite regularly driving around in Scotland as we have to high rev to get around the hills here.) or after a run of 10+ minutes and I come to a stop - and the DPF regen is active which causes the smoke... I am then seeing when coming to a stop and then pulling away, the engine smoking for a short time. It’s a lot. Having connected the engine to VIDA, I have completed a manual regen on the DPF and I have cleared the soot counter to 0 with the regen. However, when monitoring the SOOT accumulation after the regen I can see every time I REV the engine the soot increases .2 or more and the filter is clearly getting blocked and this happens within 10 minutes of driving. There is clearly some oil still leaking into the exhaust. I can also push the car immediately into Soot filter full if I boot the engine hard to 4K revs after startup. I thought that this could be a charged air side leak but there is no noise, no obvious signs of an air leak and I have checked all of the charged air pipework - its good. Conclusion With the current symptoms my conclusion is as follows: Worn valve guides - There is no loss in power, the engine runs beautifully and smoothly, compression test by VIDA is constant So it must just be something as simple as £20 worth of valve seal which will cost about £500 + to replace! Does anyone else have any other suggestions or thoughts or comments? |
There was a poster called O' Sullivan ( or similar ) on here with exactly the same symptoms on his Xc90 e4 and he did all that you did but went much further by checking piston rings etc.
At the end of the day what made a massive difference was replacing the PCV valve which is about £20. After reading his exploits I replaced the PCV on my 90 as a matter of course when I purchased my 90 even though I had no issues. The diaphragm can weaken and allow oil to be sucked in and burnt. For the cost worth a try. Search for his thread. 👍 |

This is my first time on the forum for months.... But I can report that since I changed the PCV valve that I have had no oil burned probably in about 20k miles. (has been parked up since christmas, will not start now?) Lon story short I had been told it was tappets, turbo. valve oil seals, rings etc I did all of these and still it used oil which was not actually burned but blown into the exhaust/DPF where it blocked it up....
I theorise that when the PCV goes wrong, because the spigot for it is so close to the turbo intake that suction is drawing oil out of the block as vapour which is passing through the cylinders that the ecu is not firing, and this vapour is then passing through into the exhaust system...unburnt... I would suggest for a 10 euro part it is worth changing... it is more than a diaphragm there is also a spring involved also worth cleaning the entire vortex thingy... |

I also changed the Pcv valve on my c30 d5 and xc90 d5 after reading the thread mine is on 186000 miles and it also made a huge difference to the way it drove it felt a lot more responsive and revved a lot more freely.
It costs about £27 all in from Volvo, that’s what I paid 3 months ago. Daniel |
