ABS sensors
Are the pattern parts any good? They seem to range from £30 each to well over £70. Any opinions?

Usual best sticking to something at least with a brand, and giving all the connections a good clean, clean the pick up rings on the front up. If its really cheap wouldn't trust it to be that long lived.

What he said ^^^^^ but a little bit of extra information for you, the front ABS sensors on the 7/9xx range are the same as used on the front of Mk3 Cavaliers and the rear of Rover 800s but the plugs are different so would need changing to the Volvo plugs.
Also the only way you're likely to get them out is with a combination fo drilling, blowtorch, chisel and eventually die grinder. Once they're out, lightly grind the hole so it's slightly bigger and polish to a mirror finish or as near as. When you fit the replacement sensor, smear the body of it with a waterproof grease (not the tip) to help prevent corrosion in the bracket/control arm as this is usually what kills them - the corrosion forms crystals of rust which grow and crush the sensor. If you're selling the car and just need to sort the ABS for the MoT to sell it, a cheap one will get you working again and the car sold, if you're keeping it, get the bosch one or a well-respected pattern part. ;) :D |
Thanks guys, it's for my big turbo project on this forum, it's nearly ready for an MOT but forgot about the sensors I had to remove. Bosch ones are £111!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wheel-Spee...sAAOSwtIBZuAYw At £30 a side, it gets you through the MoT and then you have the choice, put money aside for a pair of Bosch jobbies so if/when they fail you can replace with Bosch or if they last then you're quids in. ;) :D |
Charlton Volvo in Paisley are worth calling; I sourced a sensor for the Exxon Valdez from them for a quarter of the price that GSF/Euro Car parts wanted.

Definitely don't take the speedo cluster out and wire the ABS light up to the SRS light for MOT Test purposes. :mouth_closed:

I’d probably go for this one. It’s about what I paid for a Bosch one last time I needed one.

I fitted a £26 one purchased via Amazon seller 'JuDing', posted from somewhere abroad. It's been absolutely fine since March 2016, so I would definitely try a cheap one.
Removing one from another model is a sound idea but they rarely come out without damage so isn't really an option. |
Two years ago we bought a £30 jobber for the OSR wheel. This year, same one failed. The other three are still original. Go figure.
I'm expecting to replace it again, then, in another two years. Next time, dunno, we'll see how rich I'm feeling :-) |
