Petrol smell inside car
 

Hi everybody.

I had my tank replaced for new a few weeks ago and now there is a petrol small inside the car when I first go in in the morning and while driving (also with window open). I don’t think it can be the joint between filler pipe and tank since it’s new. However I’ve noticed two things:

The rubber fill cap thingamabob is old and cracked
The petrol cap is more wobbly than it was on the original tank

Can someone link the Brookhouse item that I need to replace the rubber?
And is the cap likely to be part of the problem? I notice Brookhouse sells new lockable caps.

I can’t see any drips when the car is standing.

Check your connections in the engine bay.See if the connections are damp before you start

On warm days petrol evaporates quickly so you may not see any drips. Fuel pipe may be corroded and holed where it has been disturbed. Dirt in the fuel and old tank may now be causing flooding/leaks at the float in your carb. Run the car for a few minutes, start at the rear and work forwards. Check all along the lines including the pump area.

Just thought but had you checked the fuel level sender in the boot, if they replaced the tank did they do the sender unit(is it screwed down tight enough) - Mine leaked around it when I had petrol smell in the car !

Good points all - thank you. They didn’t replace the sender since it was only a few years old anyway but I’ll check how well screwed down it is.

What is the rubber thing around the petrol cap called on the Brookhouse catalogue please (I can’t see anything similar).

One last thing..pay particuar attention to ..
The seam around the tank and inspect any rubber connections very carefully. In addition, carb dependant , check these very very carefully to ensure your float(s) float and have not been compromised by ethanol
