Volvo V40 steering locked after power steering malfunction

Hi people. Any help or advice appreciated.

Driving normally. Steering became a little heavier. Not automatically centering if I let go of the wheel for example.

Then a notice popped up.
Power steering service urgent.

I stopped the car and restarted.
The steering was impossibly heavy. Just about got it parked up.
New message. Steering malfunction. Stop safely.

RAC came out. Tried alternator and battery, but these were fine. He reset the codes on the car. Power Steering felt back to normal(except from auto centering) but he advised that it could be the steering rack. Especially as it still didn't re-centre.

The car got me home. As I slowed down near home. Steering got heavy. Same steering malfunction message came back. I parked at home.

A few days later, I needed to move the car up a bit. But I found the steering lock was fully on after the car started. The wheel cannot be moved at all.

My mechanic came out, planning to drive it to his garage, I think expecting that the wheel would unlock. But it didn't. He said "it's not the rack, the steering lock isn't working." I asked if he could sort it but he said it would have to go to Volvo. I can't afford that... It's a killer.

Please, any ideas at all? Help!

Power steering failure

Hello, what is the age and mileage of your car?I have come across these messages before and in most cases a phone call to your volvo main dealer service reception may give you an indication of what to do and costs etc.If you have a volvo service history it may help in repair costings as Volvo have been known to help.

This seems like a battery or earth problem.
There is insufficient power and the steering is the first to suffer. Also, once power is restored (the RAC man) I think you have to reset the parameters of the steering by fully turning the wheel in both directions so it can find the central point.

Hi guys, thank you for your responses.

The car is 63 reg 2013.
Miles approx 80k.
Contacted volvo and a steering rack replacement is £913+VAT for the part and £300 surcharge for ordering. This is for the part only.

My local mechanic said that the full steering rack needs replacing.
I bought a second hand rack on ebay with the same OEM.
However, he said he could fit the rack but it might need reprogramming, which he could not do.

I had also been to another local garage who said that the issue is the EPS module or motor. They initially said they could replace that on it's own. However they later called to say that they could not do it as it would need to go to Volvo (I think they meant because it turned out that the module could not be replaced without a complete steering rack, and replacing the steering rack would mean reprogramming/calibrating).

I phoned an independent Volvo specialist who said that you cannot fit a second hand steering rack because they cannot be reprogrammed. I would have to buy a brand new rack. (However, I know from reading around that these second hand racks are sold regularly on eBay and lot's of people are having them fitted, so it's simply not correct - is it?)

I am so stuck...

Ps, the battery and earth have been checked and appear to be fine.

One other thing is, I have now unlocked the steering wheel by clearing the fault codes. The car can now be driven in theory (although, turning the wheel makes a whirring noise).

Used steering lock can be programmed. The issue is metal pin in steering lock. Here on you tube is video how to fix stuck pin. It's from 2008 v70 but they are similar https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B0HTbDftz30

If it is an electric steering pump on your car I would definitely get the alternator/ battery checked again before changing racks and bits. These cars use so much electrical power and any voltage fluctuations can cause issues.
On my V50 I am on my 3rd alternator in 10 years.
Think there are some tests that can be done in Vida or equivalent Volvo software.
