V40 1.9D won't rev freely and puffs blue smoke
 

Hi everyone.

Back again with yet another problem with my old girl. She's becoming a little bit of a headache. This time she's being very sluggish.

Anyone who's driven the 1.9D knows it can be pretty punchy when driven right. This morning, on my way to a funeral of all things, the car decides to loss all power as i geared down into 3rd and exited a small roundabout. Even putting my foot flat down in 2nd wouldn't get it to move with any sort of haste at all.

I've since got her home and looked around. Can't see anything wrong from a visual inspection of the engine, but she wouldn't rev past 2.5K, now that I've started her up a few times and revved it, it won't rev past 3K. Does rev slower than normal, by a good amount too. Also, when i rev it, blue smoke comes out the exhaust, indicating an oil leak.

I have cleaned out the EGR a couple weeks back, so I'm wondering whether any loose clump of gunge I had missed had worked free and was blocking something, dunno whether that's right or not.

Any ideas anyone? Tried unplugging the MAP and EGR, but no dice, nothing changed. Haven't tried the MAF, but can't see it being the problem if it's cooking oil.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as she can't be driven now... Again.

It does sound to me like a clump of stuff may have wedged it open like I mentioned might happen, however when mine did that it struggled to move barely at all until around (eventually, many years later) 3k when it picked right up and f###ed off into the sunset...
It is worth checking it though to be sure, before doing owt else.
Other thing could be a non functioning turbo or a different pipe popped off etc...

How would I find out whether it was something stuck? Just drive it around the block a few times at high RPM? I checked the turbo impeller shaft on the turbo, and didn't seem to have much play, same as last time really

I took egr out and there was a nugget of crap wedged in the valve seat holding it open...

Oh no, please don't tell me I have to take that EGR valve off again :'(

Fair enough. Hopefully it is something like that, and not an important oil seal 😅

Oh, other thing to check is feed to airbox, air filter, feed from air box to turbo, something may be collapsing under suction or blocking the passage, not too much of a problem until the turbo starts sucking hard then it can be like hitting a brick wall!

Welp i tried the inner Valve, and it was free as anything. Was putting the outer valve back on and dropped a bolt down the back of the engine... Joys. Gonna look for that tomorrow maybe if I have time.

I know what you mean about the air intake, but how would that lead to it burning oil?

Wouldnt necessarily, but, rich mixture due to less air, might be drawing oil from the turbo seals due to the resultant vacuum, could account for the smoke...
