Oil

Hi Folks can anyone suggest what oil I could use for 98 C70 2.4LPT 190bhp please ? Handbooks suggest 10w40 which seems old fashioned. A 5w30 or 10w30 be better?

Thanks

I've been using 5w-40 fully synthetic from ECP in the Volvo & Merc for ages without any adverse effects. always changed at 5000mls

No, a 5w30 or 10w30 would be worse!
Use 10w40 or 5w40 A3/B4, dont use any other spec or you could have trouble.
Lots of info here https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=283503 if you need to get some idea why.

I use a 10/40 semi synthetic

This may be useful...

Thanks folks... ECP advise 0w40 or 5w40 or 0w30. Halfords are 5w40 or 0w40. Castrol are 0w30.
Don't fancy going as low as the 0s...

Mine runs on 10w40 castrol magnetic for the last 2k miles, warms up easily and stays on temp, no weird noises, the engine is more quiet than before... But then mines a t5, so that might be a difference...
(also ecp, volvo and amazon recommended 10w40 for mine)

0w is the thickness when cold, and is much thicker than the hot viscosity of the 40.
If the manual states xW40 then dont use an xW30. 0w/5w/10w all fine.
Thus 0w40, 5w40, 10w40 👍
0w30, 5w30, 10w30 👎

Dont fall for the misunderstanding of multigrade oils. If an engine is specced for 10w40; 0w40 is not too thin, but 10w30 is too thin.

Ecp are horrific with oil, they pretty much list just about all their stock for anything. Halfords a bit better. The handbook/service book is gospel as that is what manufacturer designed the engine around (though its the hot visc that matters mostly)

Thanks for advice folks. Checked back the previous service invoices thinking the volvo dealers would know...2008 magnatec 10w40, 2009 Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 was used as recommended by VCC?
2013 Castrol Edge Professional 0W-30 fully synthetic A5/B5 ?
2014 Castrol GTX 5W-30 A1 ?
Dah !

That is classic mechanic ignorance!
They believe that 'new standards' supercede what has gone before. Using 0w30 A5/B5 in an engine designed around 10w40 preceeding A3/B3 spec is so irresponsible and plain ignorant. Dont worry too much, unless you drive it very hard I doubt much damage has been done.
A5/B5 does not and never will supercede A3/B4. It has now superceded A1/B1 though.
Goes to show, the big dealers arent necessarily the ones to trust! Infact, they can have some of the more ignorant, computer biased, barely practising technicians who arent always true mechanics. Of course not all of em fit that bill, but lots do.

Again, what does the manual state? Pic of page?
