EGR Blanked - Ongoing report
 
So today i have finally got around to fitting my new project.

I had a spare mixer pipe laying around so had it pressure washed, parts washed and scrubbed clean to get all the baked in crud out, and now it looks good as new!! Fitted a blanking plate i bought from ebay with liquid gasket and fitted it in place of the old, dirty caked up one on the car.

I have to say since blanking off the egr, the difference is quite surprising! Throttle response is much more lively feeling and knowing none of the exhaust crud from the EGR is getting into the mixer pipe now, just Fresh, Clean, COLD air is a massive bonus!

Im yet to see any MPG differences but ive only done 35 miles!

I will report back in 500miles (roughly a tank) as i have noticed there are very little threads online with follow ups on how the blanking did or didnt improve the car!

I got our workshop boys to do it as a favor. One of the perks of having the right equipment to hand :thumbs_up: Did take a few hours mind lol!

Lets just hope it stays that clean!

Hi Simon, i cant find the link at the moment as it was on my laptop.

It came from Poland though and cost about £5, which i didnt think too back for a nice bit of finished stainless!

I took about a week to come though so be prepared to wait.

We are 120 miles in so far and the car is so much more smoother to drive and doesnt seem to run out of puff at top end revs like it did before.

Waiting a bit longer to report back on mpg changes, but driveability and performance is definitely improved.

So far its all :thumbs_up:

Has your temperature gauge needle went up any further?

It seems to get up to temp slightly quicker than before, by that i mean it takes 4 mins instead of 5 for arguments sake. Nothing drastic and could just be a placebo effect.

Its not gone above half way or "normal temp" yet (mine has always sat just on the right edge of the half way white line)

I cant see how closing the EGR will make a great deal of difference to the running temp. I know it will apparently result in hotter combustion temps, but the air going in is much cooler and the exhaust gas is going straight out instead of sitting in the EGR valve and being sent back into the head, so im just keeping an eye on that and not too worried

If you haven't got access to cleaning facilities, an overnight soak in paraffin will get the mixer pipe plenty clean enough or if you're in a rush, carb cleaner does it too but it can take a good couple of cans.
I'll follow this with interest as I'm currently keeping my egr standard but regularly using Diesel Purge to keep combustion clean and efficient.
It would also be interesting to see what the effect is on IAT and whether the air really is cooler entering the engine.
I don't suppose you've got any figures yet have you?

A correctly functioning cooling system will maintain a dead centre needle position regardless of this mod.
If your needle strays past halfway on a Volvo, you have a problem.

Its been like that for the 7 years i have had it. It is on the centre mark but on its furthest edge slightly.

Maybe it is the perception from where i am looking at it or could it be the fact the DIM has been repaired 3 times and been knocked out of place slightly?

Its never gone above this point though so should be ok?

The IAT temperature sensor is before the EGR and part of the MAF i believe, so i presume that it wouldnt know any difference if the EGR is blanked or not?

The only part it could affect would be the lambda sensor or some exhaust sensor as this is after the EGR and combustion i would assume?
