850R radiator replacement
 

Hi.

Is it possible to replace the radiator in an 850R from above? I have no ramps and only the standard jack. Last time I did it from underneath, but is it possible to do it from above this time at all?

This article it's removed from the bottom, but in the Haynes manual for both 850 & V70 it says lift out radiator from above.

I removed it from above on my C70, because I couldn't get the car high enough to take it from under.

Did mine from above. You will need a decent tool kit though, and you will need to raise the car at the front to get at the bottom hose etc. If you don't have a decent jack and axle stands, don't even think about doing it, they're not expensive and the car can very easily fall off the standard jack, with horrendous consequences if you're anywhere near being underneath it.

Your main hassle is going to be removing the main radiator mounting bolts down the side of the radiator at the bottom. They screw into captive nuts, and are almost certainly rusted in, so when you turn them with any force you'll break the captive nut off and they'll spin round. To solve this you will almost certainly have to get right underneath the car, so the above advice is even more important. Plus a standard jack won't get the car high enough to get at these nuts anyway.

Beware that the radiator assembly is quite heavy to lift out, I rigged a rope and pulleys from a beam in the garage when I did mine.

Just a tip, I used two flat logs of wood to drive the front wheels on. That way there is no risk of it crashing down on you.
