Whats a 74' 144 worth?

Hi all,
My first post on this forum....
I was offered yesterday a 74' 144GL with a B20E and full black leather, owned by same family since new, been stored for past 18 years,

It will need a bit of work to get it back running and up to scratch, beneath the dust it is in very good original condition,

My question is,how much is it worth? (Im more of a 240 man myself) i.e. is it worth the 4-500 quid in parts to get it running?

Hi Ben,

I'm no 140 expert, but if the £400 / 500 you mention is all that needs to be spent, and the rest of the car is in very good order, with no rust etc, and good paint and interior, and a tidy engine bay, then that sounds like very good value to me! The bodyshell is basically the same as the 240 isn't it? I guess that you are familiar with what to look out for.

Values depend on so much - e.g. what's the history file like? If it's a desirable spec (e.g. overdrive), and all the service history etc, and is in very good condition, then at a guess, it could be worth maybe £1500 / 2000 when recommissioned (no doubt a 140 expert will correct me on this!!).

Hi Paul,

I was offered this car for free so i was just wondering if it was worth recommissioning,it seems from what you tell me that it is,

I havent seen it yet but i have been told that the paint/body etc are all immaculate.

I think i will definitely worth taking as its 30 years old and hence eligible for classic tax and insurance here, both totalling 180 euro per annum so it will make for somewhat economical motoring,

Cheers for the advice.

Ben

are the classic tax rules over there different from mainland UK (hard cutoff at end of 1972) then?

Hi Chris,

In the north i presume the rules are the same as mainland uk but here in the south it is different,
Classic insurance is easy to get once a car is 20yo or older,
Once a car is 30 years old it is exempt from the nct (bi annual NCT) but it also qualifies for €41 tax, this is the crippler when owning a relatively large car here, a 2.0 car here will cost €539 per year to tax, a 2.5 €698 a year,it varies these are just examples.
This is the main reason why i am going for older cars these days, found another 164 last night a dead ringer for mine and im also taking this 144 so ill have 3 "classics", the tax is bearable on one car but i have approx 5 240s that run and will be used, thats over 2.5k per annum "dead money",

Ben,

In the back of this month's 'Practical Classics' magazine, a Condition 1 140 series is given a guide price of £1500.

Hi,
Thanks for that hadnt thought of looking in pc,
I have secured the car now just have to collect it,
Is it difficult to get parts for a 144 or do they share many parts with the 240's?
