S60 Late 2017 Battery issue
 

Hi everyone - new user here so be gentle - new S60 owner with start/stop battery. I took delivery about 6 weeks ago. The car had been sitting on a forecourt, but was driven down from Bristol - so as it's only 3 years old and less than 22K miles, I didn't think there was any problem with the battery. However, I soon noticed that start/stop was unavailable even though it was switched on in the car. The manual suggested 15 minutes of driving would top it up - but to no avail. No start/stop, and getting the odd low battery message and messages saying the infotainment system was about to shut down due to low battery (when the car was switched off natch). So took it for a good spin on Sunday - at least an hour - only to be greeted with a low battery message on my return. Its not the first time I've had that message after a decent spin. I assume I am looking at a new starter battery - but just in case I thought I'd ask you good people, there might be a fix somewhere or should I also be investigating the alternator as the battery isn't charging? My 2015 V60 behaves basically the same, I raised it with Volvo at the last service and they reported the battery was fine, just low on charge. It's been over a year since this behaviour started and there has been no further deterioration.

Basically it seems the car is very fussy about the battery state, so with an aged but perfectly functional battery it gets upset and turns off the stop-start. A good charge at 14.4V on a 60A capable supply can get mine happy again, but it quickly settles back to its "low battery" state.

You can try a battery management sensor reset (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu9z5m78Szw) but I suspect the car will settle back to its current state.

I was going to replace the battery, but the prices/availability are poor right now, so I hook up the charger if its left for a while (Volvo recommend 2 weeks max without charger).
