XC60 2017> B4 Engine DPF

Had an XC60 for just over 6 weeks with 5000 miles on the clock. Noticed a burning acrid smell and what resembles exhaust fumes entering the passenger compartment when in slower traffic, regardless of distance.
Car has been recovered to dealership who couldn’t find fault and said it is the DPF regenerating.
Is it normal to be able to smell it inside every single time? Is it a normal feature of DPF’s? Has anyone got experience or advice?
I’m slightly upset as this is otherwise my dream car but doesn't feel safe with these fumes anymore.
Thanks

I too was concerned by this smell. When the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is full and you are cruising at 40mph+, the car goes into a mode that burns off the excess carbon in the filter by using extra fuel and running at a higher temperature. So if you get out of the car and there is this stink, next time you drive ensure you go at a steady 40mph + for 20 minutes or longer to complete the operation. I think it happens around every 500 miles, depending on style of driving and operation.

I would say that it's not normal to smell the DPF regen - I've certainly never smelt it in almost 40K miles with my V90 D4.

I've got a very vague recollection of someone else reporting getting fumes in the cabin during the region cycle - this must have been 18-24 months ago I'd guess. Can't remember the detail but pretty sure it took a few return trips before they diagnosed the fault. Again, can't be sure but pretty sure there was an issue with a seal (on the bulkhead perhaps..?) that had to be fixed. Might be worth doing a few forum searches to see if you can find anything that helps.

Just noticed OP was 2 months ago from a new user who hasn't been back online since - not sure we'll get an update on this one.

From the XC60 manual:
Note

The following may arise during regeneration:
a smaller reduction of engine power may be noticed temporarily
fuel consumption may increase temporarily
a smell of burning may arise.

So the burning smell is normal
