Book time - steering rack gaiter?

Please can anyone tell me what the book time is for replacing a single steering rack gaiter on a 2011 V70?
Car failed MOT on it yesterday (2 weeks after a service where it wasn't picked up???). I let them do it and was charged 1.5hrs fitting for the privilege? Looking under the car it looks like a half hour job.
Have I been fleeced?
Many thanks.

You are spot on , half an hour exactly !

Many thanks.
I've sent an email to their customer service helpline querying the cost.
If I get anything back then I'll owe you a pint!

maybe they included a 4 wheel align in that price ?

NAD Jun 17th, 2018 19:17

No, I paid for that separately!

I was sceptical about the boot in the first place as I had the car serviced two weeks ago at a local Volvo specialist (First Choice, who I found from recommendations on here) and they went through everything, but made no mention of a failed boot.
The odds of it failing between then and the MOT are tiny, so I was sceptical about how it got 'damaged' in the first place. Doubly so when I got the bill.

It was an expensive day - 4 tyres, MOT, 4-wheel align and then the boot on top of it all.

(Just for clarity, it was not First Choice who did the tyres and MOT!!)

I may be guilty of misjudging these guys but it really does sound like a con job.

We will see what their customer services department say.
I've always been happy with their service in the past, so was rather surprised this time around.

This isn't the first time I have come across a general garage charge more than the main dealer … however , this job is the same for 90% of the makes on the road so nothing difficult or special .

Following NAD's statement

my impression is not that he was overcharged for the work but that no work was actually required and he paid for the needless replacement of an undamaged item. How you prove that after the event I couldn't say.

Actually a little bit of both.

It is possible that a failed steering rack boot was missed during a service, although I would be rather surprised, since they are so obvious.

As I couldn't say how it got damaged, not that they showed it to me, I agreed to have it done. I was rather surprised that they billed me 1.5 hours, since it looked like a very simple job to do. I'm aware that some jobs have a short book time which is difficult to achieve and the garage loses out, equally others have longer book time than it takes in reality and the garage 'wins'. Hence my question about what the book time is, as that would be what I would expect to be charged, unless something particularly strange happened.
