boat whistle noise from engine

i have a 2001 v40 2.0t and a strange noise has started. sounds like a boat whistle. i usually happens when i release the clutch or when the engine is under load. no problems with gear change or noises with the clutch(down or up) any ideas?

Boat whistle? -Something like this?

Manual or automatic gearbox?
-If manual, does it happen in all gears or only one?

Check the gear oil level.
If low, then check for leaks.

I had the same problem. A weak high pitch whining in 5th gear, oil spots underneath the car when parked.
It turned out the gearbox had lost its oil due to a leaking drive shaft oil seal.

Its just as I take off in first as a release the clutch. Recently topped up the gearbox oil. Slight leak from the drive shafts seals.

Otherwise normal clutch movements and gear selection.

Sounds like something is seriously grinding away at something else.
Not quite the sound you would expect to hear if the thrust bearing fails.
Try to take off in 2nd gear . . . same sound?

Most likely Clutch release bearing ??

It may be so, if the sound only occurs when engaging the clutch.
The sound should go away as soon as the foot is taken off the clutch pedal.

I took off in 2nd gear and the noise is still there. It occurs also in reverse as I back in to the drive way(really noisy).
Most noisy in a cold start. Slight wheel bearing rumbling noise also.(but not wheel bearing)but disappears quickly.

If it is the clutch release bearing the noise should only be present when the clutch is engaged (depressed pedal). I've never heard of instances when the bearing makes noises otherwise.
If the noise is present with the foot off the pedal it must be something else . . . perhaps the clutch? Only way to find out is to remove the gearbox and inspect the clutch.

I brought it to a mechanic and he said its probably the tensioner pulley on the fan belt. At full steering lock I can see the tensioner bouncing. Ordered a tensioner and I will keep ye informed!

In which case you are in luck
