Realistic MPG for 2.0D and 2.4

I'm in the market for a new company car, and after previously owning a V50 2007 MY 2.0D, am thinking about a V70. The V50 was a great car, but is a little small for the family, especially the boot. I only ever managed to get about 45 mpg from that engine, in a fairly light car.

I'd be looking at either a 2.0D SE Lux or a 2.4D SE Lux, but I'm a little frightened by the fuel consumption figures I've seen on here. I know they're a big car but I wonder if anyone would be willing to indicate what real world mpg they are getting from these engines. I think that I'm a fairly economical driver - at the moment I have an A4 1.9 Tdi and I'm getting 50 mpg from that - mostly on urban motorway at around 60 - 65 mph. I do 20 - 25k per annum and I don't get company fuel so this is a substantial investment!

I would tend to think that the 2.0D would probably be okay, but I'm a bit worried about the lack of power in the V70. I'd prefer a 2.4D but from what I'm reading on here about the D5 the average mpg must be less than 40? In which case, it's really not economical for me to choose this.

Thanks in anticipation

Iain

Hi blaze591. I have driven my D5 from new for about one month now and have covered just over 4,000 miles. So far the computer tells me that average mpg is 39.5 and that is about 70% motorway driving (mixed speeds due to traffic but mainly 70 - 80mph) and 30% town. If you did have a heavy foot I suspect this could drop significantly, although to counter that, the engine still has to loosen up a little I suspect.
Hope this is of use.

Regards, Mark.

The computer usually gives a figure better than is actualy being returned.

For example, my MY03 V70 D5 is telling me it's averaging 39 when in the current weather it's only giving me 33-4.

The only way to accurately get your MPG is to do a 'fill-to-fill' test.

"Brim to Brim" I get around 35MPG - 80% motorway (@80-85mph) - 20% town. + Very cold winter starts + winter tyres.

% = distance

Mine is a remapped D5.

At a steady 60-65mph on a motorway you will get a lot better economy - I think my best for a 250kmh round trip was around 50mpg :D :D

Don't be confused by the older 2.4 V70's (up to about 2006 I think) actually get much better mpg than the new models, that's why you'll see some figures around in excess of 50mpg (using the computer)

I often get confused about which car I drive :D

I've got a D5 (185) SE Sport Manual. Had it about a month and a half now and I've been tracking the MPG for the last three weeks as it seemed really poor. The computer was saying that it was doing around 31-32 but measuring it brim to brim it's actually doing 27mpg !

That's on a mix of B roads and dual carriageways. By comparison the 51 reg D5 V70 Manual that it replaced was doing 38-40mpg under exactly the same use and the 56 reg D5 C70 Auto I've got does around 36-37mpg on similar roads.

I was expecting the new one to be a little bit worse than the previous one but this is absolutely ridiculous. If it doesn't improve as the weather gets warmer it's going into the dealer to see if there is anything wrong as this surely can't be right.

Now 1600miles D5 Geartronic
the fuel up to date as follows
32.49
31.13
31.49
30.48 local running A and B roads...........:(

Previous 2.4D EU 4 was on average 34- 38 mpg

all done tank to tank.

My results are on SpiritMonitor.de

It is a big heavy car with a good amount of power. I don't expect miracles.

If fuel costs are the biggest worry then buy a C30 1.6D DRIVe

IIRC me old girl (2.4D Geartronic) did an average of 42mpg, that was a mix of town driving and single carriageway a-road stuff. Not sure if the 6-speed auto makes a big difference to the economy compared to the 5-speeder?
I can't recall the exact figures but I do remember it managing a silly amount of mpg on a holiday to Wales last year, that was on the way home so long stretches on the motorway at 75...
