2016 V40 D3 Smoke

Hi All,

I have a Dec 2016 V40 D3. It has just over 50k miles. I have noticed quite a bit of dark grey smoke out the back when i accelerate in 4th gear. Not so much of an issue in other gears. When the car is started in the morning, and I am standing behind it, the fumes don't too smell too good. I just haven't noticed that with any diesel I have had previously.

I have given it a couple of doses of Redex diesel, as well as an 'Italian tune-up', but it hasn't helped. It has been serviced (but not by a dealer), and has never been modified/tuned or mapped. It doesn't seem to be going through oil. Has anyone any ideas or advice?

Thanks!

Modern diesels can smell very peculiar when cold and the catalyst isn't up to working temperature, so I wouldn't be too concerned about that. Maybe compare it to idling when the engine is fully up to temperature after a run?

It takes only minute quantities of oil to cause smoke under hard acceleration, and as I think your car has an electronic dipstick you would need to monitor over several thousand miles to be sure.

Thanks for your reply. It does have an electronic dipstick, and I haven’t noticed it use much between services. I will keep an eye on it. The plumes of smoke out the back is concerning as it is not a high mileage car. I just wondered if it is something mechanically wrong, or if it is software related, maybe over fuelling as it only seems to happen at high rpm in 4th gear.

If it was overfuelling it would be black smoke...
