Significant problem with oil sludging and turbo failure
 
Howdy folks! Is this well known problem common knowledge with the Volvos? A colleague with this engine in a 05-plate Focus has just had to have a new turbo (just shy of a grand, fitted) because of oil starvation caused by sludging.

A call to my preferred turbo supplier revealed much sucking of air through teeth and sighing, with comments that these engines are "bad". They sell a lot of turbos for these engines, and refuse to warrant them unless a LONG list of other measures are taken to de-sludge the oil system. I have their guidance available as a PDF if it would be useful.

Specifically the section starting "The engine must be run with a lowSAP oil..."

The moral of the story appears to be to get the engine serviced on-time, and using the right oil. Rather like the old D24 engine in the 2/7/900s, it's sensitive to lazy maintenance.

Anyone else know about this / experienced it / have comments?

Indeed ! This engine is sensitive to poor servicing and incorrect oil but in the volvo it does remarkably well with few faults , maybe because most volvo owners have them serviced correctly . Use 0w/30 A5/B5 oil and service at 12000 intervals .
This engine in Citroens suffers a lot , as you say sludge completely blocking oil filters , therefore turbochargers ruining themselves , sump pan oil leaks , EGR valve problems , Injectors leaking combustion gas at their seats and siezing in , con rods through the side etc ..
It is interesting to note the Citroen sumps use a different colour sealant to volvo who don't seem to suffer the leaking sump problem .. So perhaps volvo assemble their own engines ...
When replacing the turbo it is essential to use a new oil feed pipe and also in the lower banjo bolt which holds the oil feed pipe to the block is a gauze filter which can block, so a new banjo bolt too . This is overlooked with a lot in other manufacturers who use this engine . Otherwise not a bad engine , the latest versions are 2 valve 115 bhp and run over 2 bar of boost pressure and work quite well in the big S80 and V70 .

Help please, could someone tell me the whereabouts on the engine that I can find this as I need to remove it to check its condition ??
