XC90 - desperate for help.

In may my fuel pump (I think, now not so sure) failed and the RAC took my car to the garage. The garage diagnosed in tank fuel pump failure and replaced this although it didn’t fix the problem and we also then had a fuel leak. He then replaced the high pressure pump. Broke the dog clip and replaced that before handing the car back. Two days later we got the car back and within 48 hours noticed diesel coming from the rear. We called and he admitted not replacing seals on either pump. He recovered the car to rectify the problem. Also changed my rear tyres and put a new fuel filter on. £1000 later and I got the car back.
This time three days later and I broke down again the car just turned off while in motion.
Again we were recovered and again he took it back. In the mean time I spoke to the main dealer the original mechanic said he had no idea and took it to Volvo. They had the car for about a week diagnosed and repaired which seems to be a fuel starvation problem. The fix was to change the intank fuel pump (linked line) and also glow plugs etc. Another £1500 later and they parked it on the forecourt for it to fail minutes later.
They again diagnosed and realised that the original pump had been put in the wrong way and they’d duplicated his mistake. So in goes another pump and that time it was only a few hundred as they didn’t charge labour just the new pump.

So I picked up the car and the following day decided to go out about 24 miles to see how she went. Had some issues with a little delayed start but I wasn’t sure as it’d then been a couple of months in the garages and anyway on the way back at some traffic lights the car failed. This time we were in a dangerous position and the police were called we all got the car off the road and waited for recovery but this time huge smell of diesel and when we got it on the truck you could see it dripping from the rear (main dealer never found this leak)

Forward to this week (yes th car has been in this long) they’re atill struggling and I think it’s all been a fault finding mission with no actual assurance. Got the car back last week and she went into limp mode as I accelerated away from a roundabout. Still not happening on the starting as I’d like. Took it back to Volvo on Wednesday they’ve reset computers, downloaded some software and put on a new fuel filter I picked her up yesterday. Another £300 She seemed to preforming ok and then tonight a friend said he’d take her out just to give her a run. Again he was accelerating and the car turned off. It did reset and was able to get home. I’ve taken her out for a little run (Darent go far) seemed fine and I tried turning her over a few times seemed fine.

In total I’ve now spent since feb (had all the breaks done) £4500 3.5 relating to this apparent fuel starvation issue... I’m broken. For a while now have been in the position that I’ve invested so much in trying to fix her can’t afford to replace and I just done know where to go from here.

Can anyone help please (I’m a trainee teacher)

Wow,

That does not sound good. I would park it up on the drive, make a cup of tea and then start it up and shine a torch under it from wherever you can access it and monitor for any signs of leakage. Any thing suspect use a very low pressure hose or water to scrub up then restart. Note any leaks. Open the bonnet and do the same although probably a lot of dirt and debris there. You should be able to identify the diesel lines. Any leak will cause low pressure but also allow an air bubble to get in there then your stuffed.

I would also change the air filter, you should be able to do this yourself or get a mate to do. To be fair it prob won’t resolve it but it sounds like fuel starvation and this may help.

Also put a request on here for anyone with a Volvo VIDA setup, offer some beer to whoever comes along.

Are the garage happy it’s diesel fuelling and not camshaft position sensors or MAF sensors etc.

Failing that I would be tempted to take it to a proper ‘old school’ mechanic and pay his hour or 2 hour labour to simply investigate the issue. Dealers and some of the big places are in essence fitters who are good at reading codes and changing stuff but less good at actually fault finding, u need fault finding it would seems

Independent Wanted?

Morning Nickkie, what a tale of incompetence and woe, I suggest you ask on the forum,(There are some nice forum members near you) if anybody in your area can recommend somebody who is competent, possibly an Independent Volvo garage, who can rectify your problem. I should imagine, as you are not far from,Northampton,Peterborough,Leicester. there must be somebody out there to restore you sanity!

Regards and good luck,Keith

Impossible , they have all the backup of the technical department and factory … They can't just give up half way through the job ..
