Potential 90 owner

Hi all, currently have a 98 V70 R which I’ve owned since 07 and do all my own service and repair work.

We’ve recently bought a caravan and have enjoyed our first year with it, we live in Devon and have holidayed in Cornwall so the distances have not been great so the 18mpg from the R have not being too painful but now we’re thinking of a bigger van and consequently a different tow car. Obviously wish to stay in the fold so chooses are D5 but 70 or 90? Never had a 4x4 so fancy the 90 but they appear very complex? but some say no more than the 70 except for the drivetrain obviously!

Looking at early models can’t reconcile £555 road tax for 06/07 and can’t afford later models so what people’s real world opinion on early 90’s I’ve read all the posts about gearbox’s, mine gets an annual drain and bye annual flush.

Many thanks in advance

The XC70 and XC90 are nearly identical apart from body shape. Electrics work the same.

You can't beat the XC90 as a tow car.

The early models will do just fine. My 2005 D5 163hp has pulled my 1.8t caravan all over Europe. Just be prepared to give some TLC. As you do your own work you will save money. Most jobs can be DIY. Parts can be pricey though.

If you are used to doing all of your own maintenance and repairs on your V70R then you should be able to do that on an XC90. If you haven’t got it already – VIDA is a must (well you can manage without it but you will waste hours and hours…). The earlier 163 BHP cars (with cheaper tax) are of a sufficient age now that there are plenty of spares from end of life vehicles so if you have the time and knowledge you can run the reasonably cheaply. With adequate maintenance they are usually very reliable.

They are mechanically similar to the P2 XC70 – main differences are front/rear suspension and some of the electronics are more comprehensive but with VIDA you will be fine.

If you get a good one and bring it up to top spec – a very rewarding and loyal car to own. As said -a superb tow car - the Nivomats make a big difference.
