V40 D2 wanted
 

Hi,
I'm looking for a V40 for a friend of mine who has 6-7k to spend. He's looking for a tax free or low tax car. Obviously he's looking for the best car for the money, lowish miles and a decent spec. Flexible on colour We're in the North East but prepared to travel for a private sale if the car is good.

If possible, go for the newer 2.0-litre D2 (which is a Volvo engine), rather than the 1.6-litre D2, which is a peugeot engine.

I thought the D2 had a load of clutch/DMF issues?

The ford engine did , there was a batch of clutches which the pressure plate diaphragm fulcrum ring broke ...

Thanks guys, so what year did the better Volvo D2 2.0 engine arrive ?
Under the bonnet how do I tell them apart ?
The money available puts me in 62/63 plate ballpark.

The more I look at engines the more confused I get...

I was looking at D3 engines and I assumed it was scaled down version of the 5cyl 2.4 engine as in my XC60, yet when I look at some car reviews they describe it as 4 cyl 150bhp.

What I'd really like is the 5cyl D3 150bhp with low emissions/Tax how do I tell which engine is which ?

The 2.0L D2 engine was introduced in 2016 model year cars so would have been available in cars from later in 2015.

The 2.0L D3 on a 62/63 plate car will be a five cylinder, as you say it is similar to your D5 but has a shorter stroke. The new 2.0L four cylinder D3 was introduced in 2016 model year.

Personally I would go for a 5 cylinder diesel as the engine note will make the car feel that little bit more special.

If one isn't available then the 2.0-litre D2 (from Volvo) would be next choice...though I will admit it sounded like a canal boat when I tested one, especially compared to the old 2.0-litre Ford/peugeot diesels in the older S40/V50 cars.

Having said that, sometimes unrefinement means high reliability.

I'm viewing a 62 plate V40 D3 (5 cyl) tomorrow so fingers crossed it's as described.
Slightly high mileage at 88k miles but hoping its all OK.

I'm hoping clutch etc is OK, anything else I need to look for ?

coming up to it's 90000 mile service .... then next time the big cambelt service at 108000 miles / 10 years when was it last serviced ?

Last serviced in Nov last year, its done 12500 miles since then.
I'll be advising the new owner that the best option is main dealer service ASAP, on line quote from Volvo is around £250. Think that is best as its an unknown car and they might find something I didn't see on inspection. Plus there's roadside assistance for a year afterwards.

After that... its up to him :teeth_smile:

Nice V40 D3 purchased today, car was as described, few paint blisters couple of stonechip marks, sound engine and drove very nicely so all's well that ends well. New owner loves the car, maybe a new Volvo convert.

The D3 is the pick of the bunch I think.... nice noise, nice and torquey engine, easy to drive, but will still do 55 + mpg if driven gently on the motorway, and low tax bracket.

I know the D2 (4 pot) is more economical but if you enjoy driving - the D3 is substantially better ergonomically.

Oh yeah - and ultra reliable.

The D2 is sometimes criticised but it is one of the most commonly used engines across a number of manufacturers and usually bought by people for economy reasons so the most likely model not to be maintained well.
