Door mirrors, keen to see what we’re all doing

Right, at some stage of my Amazon’s life it had its door mirrors changed to square shaped motamec classic style door mirrors. Not too bad, drivers side is fine for vision, material is awefully cheap, a mixture of plastic and chrome steel for some stupid reason. Passenger side is useless. I know if I change to convex glass I could improve the vision overall but I was wondering what everyone else is doing, more importantly can I see a few pictures of different options. Obviously the original Volvo spec mirrors must have worked when the were made so I might just go back to them. Not fussed about originality though as I’m low, no overriders on minilites... thanks here’s mine

I've just got a driver's door mirror that looks original to me - I haven't driven the car yet so I can't really tell if it is any use. But I can say in the quality of material stakes it is nicely made...

...may be the original ones aren't quite so bad after all?

If you type classic car door mirror into a search engine you'll get lots of seriously expensive options (!)

Halfords Online do a very nice period mirror which suits the amazon well and is pretty cheap . Not available in store though .

I think the one shown is actually a wing mirror. That's why the only adjustment is to the mirror head. Not a good choice for an Amazon door mirror. The Volvo type ones usually used don't work very well on the passenger door either. Driver's one clashes with the quarter light unless you find the type that has the arm hinge at the front of the door plinth. Amazon door mirrors in this position generate a lot of wind noise but you'd probably not notice it unless you were used to one with either wing mirrors or none at all.

The "Volvo" marked ones from Brookhouse etc are poor quality. The chrome is thin and there is very little adjustment.

I think they’re the ones I’ve seen on ebay

It appears after markets maybe the way forward or I get creative and design one, manufacture, skint myself making a truck load that never sell and put the whole thing down to a bad experience

Well, I'd buy a couple for my 164 at least, Nat! Seriously, on both my 145 and 164 the stems broke as if made of celery, just due wind tugs on the car covers.
Topic for this years 'jumbles - search out two decent matching pair but not necessarily marked "Volvo". One used to be cautious of items made in China, but if they comply with the old parameters - form, fit and function does that matter now? Just scrutinise before buying.

Nice one Nate!! I wonder how many £££££s have been wasted following a great idea???

You could try some where like https://www.europaspares.com/
I used them when building kit cars many years ago.

There are some nice stainless peep mirrors that I have seen used but that would mean you'd be left with holes in the door.

I have just one door mirror on my GT and its crap, so I'm always on the look out for a better solution too but don't want to go to a square/oblong mirror or go "too" modern with the looks.

Good hunting,

Mike.

I’ve decided on an outfitter called ratsport, they mainly do American stuff 50s, 60s but seems like the continental sports mirror will do well, convex glass, stainless glass back, chromed arm. I’ll let yo’ll know how it goes
