XC60 power fold mirror fault
 

I have an XC60 SE drive manual 2010. Last week the drivers side mirror folded out too far by its self. I then locked the car and it folded back in and was ok. Now today it keeps folding all the way out on unlock. I have tried to reset as per manual pressing both left and right buttons to fold in and out, and even tried folding the one in wrong position all the way in but it still folds all the way out when unlocking. I can stop in in the correct position by holding it there, but it is annoying.

I have now temporarily disabled mirror folding on locking on the menu as a temporary fix. Does anyone know the likely cause of the problem before I take the mirror apart. Thanks Rob.

After taking the mirror cover off and seeing nothing obvious, I drilled a hole in the horizontal metal rotation plate and screwed a screw in which prevents the mirror going past the correct position, the mirror now folds in and out correctly. The only slight downside is that the mirror can not now be rotated forward, but other than this it's back to normal. The screw can always be removed if I ever find out the real cause of this

Sounds like a clever workaround for a tricky electrical gremlin.....& sorry, I have no idea what the real solution should be :(

I know of a couple reasons why the mirror folding messes up as I recently had a mirror unit replaced on a 2011 XC60 D3, and I quizzed the Volvo technician on the details afterwards.. Nice chap by all accounts!

The possible causes I've been told about are:

1) The wiring in the mirror assembly isn't able to take repeated flexing (a number of years worth), so the mirror folding action eventually fatigues the wiring and it snaps. This happened in my case and broke the folding mechanism and the heated mirror.

2) If the mirror was knocked beyond it's normal stopping point, the software that controls the folding can get out of sync and the mirror sensors/software need re-calibrating.

It sounds like option 2) for you if the mirror is still moving of it's own accord.

I'm guessing a dealer could put it right but I suspect they'll charge you an hour labour for the investigation and calibration (100 ish quid + VAT). Luckily I had a few days left on my warranty!

Please do you have a picture of the location to put the screw and how did you take the back cover off.

The fault is due to a corroded/stuck retaining pin in the internal mechanism.

+1 on this. I fixed mine using this video. Retaining pin was stuck in due to corrosion.

I’ve watched the video twice now as it does a couple of things, 1 shows how to strip the mirror down and 2. In inner workings.
I must find a way of storing these handy repair vids.
