You really need to measure everything, or have a machine shop measure everything, in order to determine what needs to be done. Machine shop can tell you if rebore warranted. You should rely on machine shop to set your clearances.

The business about measuring the crank for out of round is done with a dial indicator. Measuring the journals for size can be done with vernier calipers, but also with a micrometer. Look at the backside of the bearings to see if they are marked as that will give a clue.

A bore gauge is used to measure and assess the condition of the bores. That “lip” that you felt at the top of the bore might give a clue if metal or carbon.

Had a mechanic look at engine and he recommends re bore.

Bores is hard to say without feeling and measuring. I do have a couple of sets of NOS B16 pistons if you do go that path.

Looking at the bearings I would say there is a high chance you will need the crank grinding

It depends what pistons you have and what is needed. With B16 pistons hard to find it's a case of boring to match what's available. If it's been bored before to +20 and now needs +30 and only +40 are available that's the way to go.
Oversize's listed as +20,30,40,50. Any bigger than that and it's re sleeve and back to standard. Only positive in that is the standard pistons will be more available than oversize's.

Shop should not re-bore until new pistons and rings in hand so that shop can set clearances. Let shop clean and inspect engine and let them tell you what parts to order - unless they can order.

Agree your bearings look shot.

Can you see any thrust bearings? If so, please photo. I have a B16 engine that was rebuilt, but supposedly builder forgot to install thrust bearings. But I don’t know, just the story that came with the engine.

B16 oversizes/undersizes. No thrust bearings according to the parts book.

Measure first to see what size pistons you will need then machine once you have those pistons in hand.

I know little about the B16 (but need to rebuild my one at some point) but I would think the thrust bearings are on the main bearings like B18/20 engines

No thrust as far as I can see. Should be able to lift out crank this weekend and do full inspection. On The bore. This morning I pushed a ring right down to the bottom of the bore where should be little or no wear. The ring clearance barely changed. This leads me to believe that the rings are more worn than the bore. I will check further later. Is my reasoning correct?

Things are looking brighter so far. The crank and big end journals seem to be within tolerances when checked with digital caliper but will try to get hold of a micrometer this week end to verify.

All checked and OK,within tolerance spec's. Will order new shells and rings.

Bummer! number 4 and 3 valves and seats fine but!!!number three. Will now order a set of valves and have hardened seats fitted. What exactly is the procedure. Does the machine shop source the new hard inserts or do I have to do that? I take it that i need to obtain new valves and take them along with head to workshop. Is that the case or can they work with the old valves?
