Autogear Lever button swap

well as the auto button on the v70 was getting old and sticking i thought i would invest in a repair button for the old girl here is how to fithte new button

1. Release the Gearlever gator buy turning it 1/4 turn left
2. put car into L

3. pull Upwards Sharply make sure if you have a sunroof you dont smash it
4 . Release the old push button by using a small screw driver to push the shifter gear knob button

7).Pull the old push button out and ready for replacement.
2. How to install a new push button
1). Put the new push button in the lower pin position.

2). Insert pin into the push button upper hole. The pin must go through U-shape from the bracket (see diagram 5)

3). Use needle –nose pliers to clamp the spring and move the spring on the pin (see diagram 6)

4). Push new button back to normal position.

this will stop the problem of where the key wont come out of the ignition on the 1999/2000 models and 2005 for the C70 and feels a lot better then the cracked button

its the same button for the 850 and v70 if you wanted to swap it for the nice feel

i forgot the important info the buttons can be got from IPD and EBAY

i would suggest getting together and ordering a few between members as i ordered 4 and they work out at just over £25 each when Royal mail sting you for import Dutys

Why don't you do the job the easy way and just pop the entire button mech
out of the knob

Unless the repaired knob is firmly secured as far down on the stick as possible there will still be problems

I get my buttons from damaged knobs at the breakers for free.

Thanks for reminding me that I have a 2002 C70 to do too.

Toodaloo!

Oh yeah, is this your guide or an ipd guide or both or none?

i tried doing it the ipd way and my fingers are to big i tried doing it your way but kept dropping the spring and this is a mixture of the ipd one and mine.

This is one job I have to do on my V70 TDI - but I have a spare gearchange mech complete.

And I believe the best option is to change the whole knob complete.

Once I'm confident my auto gearbox repair is good I'll be doing this.

Buy a complete knob new, take out a mortgage.
Second hand and inherit bumbling oaf syndrome.

You will not know the condition of the internals unless you take it apart.

Rebuilt my daily driver 2.5 years ago from pieces from two & 1/2 knobs.
managed to jumble together two working buttons and haven't thought about it since

until I inherited a car last week from a bumbling oaf which will inherit the remaining cobbled button....

Now, I knew there would eventually be a reason

Thanks for a useful and helpful guide.

Made two knobs into one better knob today.

A bit fiddly - but I got there.... in the end.

It's worth noting that once you've got to stage 4 that it takes quite a bit of 'persuasion' to get the relase button out far enough to to the twiddly bits. This is because of a sort of friction stop that prevents the button popping out during normal use!

At final assembly, the positioning of the two pins has to pretty accurate for it all to fit and, of course, the same persuasion to get the release button out will be needed to get it in again!

It's a pity that those links lead to such expensive parts! I could ideally do with a brand new one... but, at that price!

yeah i know what you mean chris 4 of the little buggers including the customs charge was just shy of £75
