Looking for V70 with cloth seats. Which has best MPG?

Hello,

I used to have an 04 D5 which I loved and could always get 58mpg driven carefully. I had to get rid of it cos the slave cylinder rubbers went, a few pence to replace, but would have cost over £1000 because some idiot decided to put the slave cylinder inside the bellhousing so we couldn't touch it!! Grrrrr
Plus I never used it much either.

I miss the old gal. It had 140k on the clock and looked and drove like new. I have been out of touch since then with volvos and I even hear tell ford put their stinky engines in them at some point! I would like a decent V70 that will genuinely do 50mpg+ so which variation should I be looking for these days? Reliability is also very important as are cloth seats. Many thanks guys I know you'll come up trumps. Cheers.

Really you want a pre DPF D5.
Autos are quite long lived mostly, but I prefer the manual for out and out economy.

Which year is pre DPF? They all seem few and far between these days with less than 150k...many showing 200+. I wish I had never got rid of mine in hindsight

A la Johnny Cash *one piece at a time* lol. I bet you can still get the body too as it happens.

It's the Euro 4 engines which have the DPF. These have a grey engine cover, and are either 163Bhp (denoted as 2.4D) or 185bhp (denoted as a D5).
The Euro 3 engines have no DPF. These have a black engine cover and are badged as a D5, with 163bhp. The Euro 4 engines came in around mid 2005 if I remember rightly, but of course there might be a late registered Euro 3 engine, or some dealers getting early Euro 4's. Best bet is to just open the bonnet and look at the engine cover for the clue!

That's handy to know then thanks. So E4 and D4 designations, which sometimes appear in ads, are also to be avoided?

What about the later 1.6d V70, which still seems to have good mpg amazingly, is this a good buy?

I would think the 1.6 is ok provided you only want to use the car. I think it'd be a bit asthmatic for towing or heavy loads. The 2.0 is a decent compromise.

The old Euro 3 D5 is by far the best engine in these IMO. You can find facelift Eu3 cars if you look around.

Just bought a 125k V50 S D DrivE...what a lovely car at only £1900 (wanted £2200) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-V50...e/143374494229

Lovely genuine guy and 3hr drive home faultless apart from a very slight body rumble at 65. Not front wheels as nothing through steering so may be back wheels or tyres need balancing. Looks and drives almost new. Stop/Start was a bonus. Few issues you might wish to comment on:
Only 1 remote key. Where to get spares?
Apart from the obvious oil and filter change what else should I be aware of to ensure going forward its sweet as?
Thanks.

Oh how to get Volvo History for the vehicle?
