2006 V70 auto gearbox fluid change

Hi All,

Apologies if this has been covered before, I have searched but couldn't find anything definitive. I have a "new to me" 2006 V70 D5 with 151,000 miles on the clock. It's in immaculate nick and I want to spend some money on it. It's already been serviced and flew through its MOT and it'll be going in for a cam belt change soon. I'd like to get the gearbox oil and filter changed as I've got no record of this ever being done. I've messaged a couple of local places and have just had this response from one.

There is no point changing the fluid in your transmission as you cannot replace the filter without removing the whole transmission and stripping it down. There fore you would only be replacing about 3.5 ltrs of fluid.
Is this true or does the place just not want to do the job?

No it's not true, there are methods of replacing most of the fluid.

However, I suggest that you post in the section of the forum for later cars, this is for V70 up to 1999.

They're right, there's no filter that you can easily change. However, that doesn't mean they just leave the fluid. You can replace the fluid by a drain and fill or "sump dump".

You need to do multiple drain and fills to get it clean. So drain it, fill it, drain it and fill it until the fluid is clear. You might have to do that several times if your car has never had it done, but it'll be worth it.

The vitally important thing is they use the correct fluid for your car. Putting the wrong trans fluid in can destroy the transmission.
