Xc90 friction from rear wheels

2011 xc90 r design se auto. There is a feeling of friction from the rear tyres, where moving off from a stationery position, especially if turning at the same time. No related error code on dash for this. Had previously got error code for abs but this cleared after we replaced abs reluctor rings and sensors on the front. Rear friction is still there though. Volvo garage had no clue and said it could be handbrake but i’d need yo leave the car with them for a number of days!! Meaning £££££. Also have error message for last number of months saying gear box service required. No effects on the car, gears still seem to change perfectly. Again volvo garage had NO clue! They said it would take a long investigation and they still mite not have an answer! Can anyone enlighten me?

Most likely answer is handbrake brake shoes come loose and rubbing against drum

WARNING: if this happened suddenly with no reason (meaning: you had no work done on the handbrake) then get in investigated IMMEDIATELY

The handbrake brake shoes have likely delaminated and come away from their backings, meaning that they could shift and jam the wheel, resulting in broken axle, bent and damaged rear suspension, accident and at worst death.

I've spoken to Volvo techs who have seen this happen.
OK, no death that time, but lots of damage.

Other possible reasons in decreasing order of likeliness:

Worn or bent suspension components causing very bad rear wheel alignment. Did you hit anything recently?

Tyre wear or delamination causing bad wheel alignment

Worn wheel bearing - but normally they make a lot of noise

My first thought, like Swiss, is handbrake shoes.
But, if the friction is a scrubbing of the tyres (as you suggest), then I'd also be looking at rear diff.

Thanks handbrake was adjusted in jan 17 as failed mot and need adjusters put on so perhaps that is related. That was last time handbrake was touched, we never use as always put car in park. But my father drove my car a short time before noise started and used handbrake put of habit as he has a manual xc90 and uses his handbrake. Perhaps it is related. A friend suggested the rear slip diff but there is no noise at any other time apart from when moving from stationary and turning and take off at junctions. Thanks again

Maybe the inner drum linings of the handbrake have rusted and there is rust build up meaning the shoes are not not clear of the drum

Easy for you to test: jack the rear of the car up and turn the wheels.
If one wheel is turning less easily than the other then it is handbrake rubbing for sure. Then you need to remove the brake drum to see what is happening.

I'm not clear on why you think there is friction from the rear wheels and what the symptoms are? I get how you might think there is friction setting off if you know the car well but how do you narrow that down to the rear wheels?

Any friction, whether in the brakes, bearings or diff would translate to heat when the car is moving. If the friction is sufficient that you can feel it then that would be considerable heat generated during motorway journey.

FYI older XC90's are susceptible to rear brake calipers sticking which can cause this friction - most owners notice as they smell hot brakes when getting out of the car or have a vibration at speed.

Update, mechanic friend looked at the car and checked handbrake pads shoes etc all fine. He has narrowed it down to a prob with the rear diff. But he says he is not willing to undertake the job of taking it all apart as he’s not much experience of this type. As he says there is solenoid and pump etc within the diff. Anyone else any experience of this?

Seems to be a problem with xc90 s. I know a bloke who has a 2005 and same happened to him. Have it checked before it becomes a disaster.
