Whooshing and Whistling & Error Message
 

Hi All,

So, completed 2,000 miles through France, and the last leg from Newhaven home, had a problem!

Started as a whooshing nosie as I got off the ferry, and is now a whoshing and whistling under load. After about 100 miles, got the 'Engine System Service Required' message.

I've done a bit of research, and I am pretty sure it's a turbo or intercooler hose tear/problem, but the nosie is definitely coming from the rear fo the engine (turbo) rather than the front (intercooler).

Does anyone suspect anything different, or know what part it will likely be? I am planning on taking the bottom engine cover off tonight and seeing if I can see anything obvious, but thought I'd ask in case there was a likely culprit.

I think you have a good idea what it might be. The Air Charge Pipe is known to fail, especially at the Resonator seal.

I had this problem on my 2012 Exec earlier in the year and it was the pipe mentioned in gronag’s post. A new one was about £210 I believe, plus fitting. I recorded this in my ownership thread, this might help with the part numbers.

Don't know the age of your car or what engine is fitted as you omitted this information.

On the E3 diesels (and probably the E4 but no experience) there is a rubber pipe on the turbo inlet that goes soft and squidgy as it ages, it will split over time, usually on the underside and give the 'whoosing' noise and possibly 'engine service required' message. However a split in the intake anywhere will cause these symptoms.

Thanks all - should have said it's a 2010 D5, with 65k miles.

I'v taken off the bottom cover and the charge air pipe and resonator look OK, but I can't see the top end of the resonator without a lift.

Anyway it's going in to the local chap tomorrow so we'll soon see! Hopefully just a new seal or 2. If it's the resonator I may well go for the silicone pipe replacement option.

In case anybody's interested, here's the diagnosis from the garage:

"I did various pressure tests, but had frustrating results. Even with the car on the lift, the accessibility to the area of suspicion was almost nil . You can't see much of anything down there. So I had to use the force.

I think that the pressure pipe from the turbo was the main source of the leak, and I believe that this was due to a loose clip. Or, just not tight enough. It was probably ok for all this time, until one day it wasn't. So I have removed the pipe, cleaned and looked at it and put it back on - further this time, and with the clip as tight as I dare. Curiously, there were no fault codes to clear. I've driven it, and it seems fine.

When doing the pressure test, I did notice that the little connecting rod to the swirl flaps has popped off. I connected it, but it has come straight off again. This is a sign that your flaps have seized or one has cracked. It's a common thing, and unfortunately quite a job. There are many driving around in this state, but your economy and performance can be impaired. There is also a small air leak in this area (under the engine cover - just beneath the rocker cover near the oil filler)

Just putting it on your radar."
