Water temperature sensor
 

Hi everyone,

i did a stupid thing by cutting the capillary tube of my water temperature instrument on my 63 Amazon

Do i need to change the all thing or will i be able to make it work again by welding the two pieces together?

Hi Jacques I’m afraid the gauge and tube are integral so you will need to replace. The easiest solution is to buy an electronic temperature gauge ( eBay) and sensor. Most come with 1/8 NPTF threads,so you will need an adapter with a 5/8 UNF male thread and an 1/8 NPTF female thread. You may find a good second hand Volvo gauge and tube from someone on this site if you wish to keep the car 100% original. Good luck.

If you are up for a bit of adventure, the MG Guru claims that he was able to repair a dead temperature gauge by grafting on a new bulb and tube. Obviously, these instructions are not specific to Volvo but for $250 it might be worth a try.

There are a bunch of fixes but DT-102F may be the most applicable.

By cutting the capillary tube, you have rendered the gauge into scrap...rebuilding is possible, and involved, but only with special tools and techniques, converting over to electrical is also possible.

Digging in an old bow full of parts yesterday i found these two that seem to be electric version.

Any tips to test them to be sure they work before buying an electrical sensor?

They are Amazon petrol gauges,
No interchangeability…
