940 code reader

Do I remember correctly that someone was making Volvo 940 code readers for the later cars with the port in the armrest cubby?

If so are they still available?

Hi Luke

It's Loki the GLT

I have one of his that I bought off another member who sold his 940.

Handy to have. It enabled me to find out what abs sensor was at fault.

Cheers

If you’re a bit technically-minded it’s quite easy to build your own code reader along the same principles as the earlier diagnostic units in the engine compartment. There used to be some good instructions on here with pictures, but the pictures have gone now.

But there is an even simpler version here which is worth a look.

Here’s the circuit- cheap and easy to make if you can solder.

Cheers

Handy to build yourself one Luke!

The "simpler version" referred to by Forrest doesn't have a current limiting resistor in it, the original author doesn't specify it should be a 12V LED either!

Using a normal LED without the resistor would result in a fried LED and possible a damaged ECU - the resistor is necessary!

*** EDIT *** - i'll have a look in my bits and pieces tomorrow, see what bits i've got. What colour LED would you like?

As usual an electronic whizz kid that has potentially saved my ECU! Thanks Dave.

I've message Loki so if he doesn't have any available to buy as time is hard to come by at the moment then I will build one.

Ummmm mystic silver to match the car please :D haha red or green will do fine, thanks Dave.

What's the problem with the ECU Luke? I've got most of the bits to knock one of those testers up, couple of bits i'd need to get though. Let me know if Loki can help and if not i'll sort one out for you.

Got plenty of red and green LEDs............

PM replied to. Turnaround is 2 days at present - most of the bits are buried under various model railroad projects(!?).

loki_the_glt May 26th, 2020 16:00

Just got to locate a suitable LED for the reader. I think the model railroad gremlins have hidden them.

PM replied to Loki.

Nothing wrong with the ECU Dave just that if I was to make one and hadn't had your advice on the resistor it could have been fried.
