How To Adjust 850 Handbrake

From time to time it is necessay to adjust the handbrake travel due to either shoe or drum wear...
Wear is indicated by excess handbrake travel or lack of binding of handbrake shoes...
Stage 1....Release the Handbrake travel/balancer nut fully....the nut can be found under the trim cover under the armrest storage compartment at the rear of the center consol....

Stage 2....Study the picture below, it shows the shoe adjuster wheel which forces the shoe towards the drum by turning the wheel upwards on the offside and downwards on the nearside...the picture shows the disc removed for clarity so the action of the adjuster can be appreciated....

Stage 3....Adjust the disc so that the wheel nut hole is at the eleven o'clock position on the offside and one o'clock on the nearside...shine a torch through the inspection hole shown below and using a flat bladed screwdriver move the adjuster wheel around until the shoes are forced out enough to bind the disc firmly tight.....

Stage 4.....Release the wheel two or three turns until the disc can move freely...carry out the same process on the other sides shoe...
Stage 5.... When you are satisfied that adjustment is complete tighten the travel/balance nut fully...

It is a little tricky to get enough light into the drum to illuminate the adjuster wheel but with a little perserverance the wheel will come into view....

Thanks to Dooby for the "loan" of a couple of pictures

cheers
