Cambelt change tips
Hi all,
Mainly aimed at those who have changed their cambelt themselves. The haynes manual makes reference to the following tools; 9997121 - cylinder block to flywheel (can use 8mm rod not tapered) 9997122 - exhaust camshalf sprocket to cylinder head (can use 8mm drill bit) I am planning to DIY it and it looks relatively straighforward , however can i use 8mm drill bits for both above? Also any tips tricks that would be useful to know? As the AUX belt needs removing it seems sensible to do the AUX belt and tensioner too. |
Is it worth doing the aux tensioner too? Or just the belt ?

Planning to do the cambelt/tensioner and aux belt and tensioner.
Found decent priced items online (non genuine - will await the stoning) Dayco cambelt + tensioner and SKF aux belt and tensioner can be had for around £90. Given they are quality aftermarket parts, it offers a good saving over the OEM (INA? items) |
I done mine a couple of years ago, didn't need any tools, just marked everything in normal fashion. I would replace the aux belt as when I done mine it looked good and I didn't and after 10 mines it squealed like a pig!

I did mine using genuine B&Q 8mm drill bits..... :-) Although it's twin cam they are linked with a chain so there is only one camshaft sprocket to lock.
I also bought the genuine Volvo kit of parts and found the belt was "gates". If it was a Volvo (5-cyl) engine I would always use genuine bits but for this engine in future I would get the Gates kit which is around 2/3 the cost. And yes a good idea to do the AUX belt and tensioner. |

Any tips for getting the new belt on, tensioner fully loose (all the way to the left) and it still won't clear the water pump sprocket

Figured it out , the Allen key adjustment takes it so far , needs to be locked off with a drill bit (just like the aux belt tensioner ). Full write up to come....

Just to help anyone else who stumbles upon this i have documented the steps i took here - (note: i am not a mechanic) https://youtu.be/ZGs_QuNSB2c
