Powershift Experiences.

Hello all,

I have a S40 2009 R-Design powershift which is currently in for repair as the transmission was slipping. Just wanted to hear of other peoples experiences with this model automatic and manual. Shall i be looking at anything else that is prone to fail? Only had the car 3 weeks on 74k miles and paying out £1800 for repair so dont want to be paying out loads more.

You don't say how the transmission was slipping, but it is very possible a dose of this:

might have fixed the slipping.

It works - does exactly what it says on the bottle.

The power shift box isn’t the best. It’s not a true auto either. They are very sensitive to oil type and correct servicing. Who is doing the repair?

There's a good youtube video here showing that powershift problems are wide spread : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6Sf92Ejy14&t=398s

unfortunately you have bought someone else's neglected faulty car and been left holding the baby ..They knew jolly well what they were doing …
Any evidence that the gearbox oil and filter were changed around 50000 miles ?
PS don't ever put and additives in !

Good video, think I'll steer clear of those gear boxes.

Do many new cars come with proper auto boxes anymore?

yes all the pure volvos do , the one you have is a ford gearbox as the S40 floorpan is ford .

There are lots of powershift gearboxes still running around fine though , presumably the ones which have been serviced properly ..

hello everyone. i had a company in southampton do the repair called 'the gearbox specialists' and they do these a lot on the fords. They are good gearboxes as long as they are serviced like anything. since the repair the gear changes are perfect and cars economy is excellent. so far so good and comes with a 12 month warranty. il get a transmission fluid change every 25'30k miles to be on the safe side.

powershift

I have just purchased a v50 with a powershift. I new the box was faulty when I did the deal and the price was right. Have fitted another box from a wreck and all is fine. Reading the various bolgs and such the inference is that these things may just be too finely engineered for their own good. By that I mean that very fine wear particles that just do happen get into servo parts with very close tolerances and cause problems and also coat the magnetic parts of the sensors. With that in mind I have glued a series of magnets around the outer case of the oil filter to see if I can trap this fine stuff that may get through the filter and cause mischief. Time will tell.
