ULEZ (London)
The Ultra Low Emission Zone for London came in this week 24/7 days a week. To enter it costs most cars, except the very new few, and others, including 40 years old cars, £12.50/day 0001 to 2359. Go in late in the day and come out early that's £25 to you Sir!!
I am not against reducing omissions and in fact I bought my 745 in 1990 with LH2.4 and a cat, to special order. However, the system seems to be slightly flawed. I clicked on to the Transport for London (TFL) 'Reg Checker', but erroneously entered 1 digit wrong on my Reg number and it came up as exempt from the charge. I then went onto the DVLA website and found that the Reg was for a 1990 large gas guzzling Ford for which there was no history available!! Oh joy, new number plates on order. Bob :) |
Totally absurd this ULEZ, when there's much bigger issues to be dealt with in London, namely stabbings and gang culture.
At the moment, it's fine for me when I cocassionally commute by car, but when the zone extends to the North and South Circulars - it'll mean £12.50 a day for me added to my commute! :angry_smile: Not to mention the thousands of diesel taxis and buses, which still put out loads of soot and nitrous compounds. I took a ride in one last week that looked like a container ship on full thrust when it accelerated. Why not make them electric, like bus companies are eventually getting around to doing? Or hybrid with small petrol turbos? I'd be willing to bet everything I own that our old "gas-guzzling" (a term which I absolutely loathe) petrol-engined Volvos put out a lot less nasties into the atmosphere than a 5 year old diesel. Bottom line is, as they come into the UK as "emissions exempt", it gets transferred onto things like this. Alternatively, you may have hit one one of the many that have been converted to LPG which is of course exempt as it produces much lower emissions than petrol engines. :thumbs_up: |

I might be confusing it with the Congestion Charging Zone David, i'm fairly sure LPG converted cars are exempt from that, as long as they are on the LPG register. Maybe the rules have been changed for the ULEZ, i'm not sure.
Either way, it all started about 35 years ago when the government, against advice, decided to adopt diseasels as the "green" choice. This was a decision heavily influenced by the EU because the more influential memeber states had government funded car manufacturers who couldn't make a petrol lean-burn engine that worked properly but could make diesels that gave, on the face of it, relatively low emissions. They insisted on 3-way cats to prevent petrol engines chucking out too many emissions but they failed to take into account the micro-particles from diesels and also the hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg smell) from petrol cats. That is also poisonous but they seem to be glossing over that fact as well. |
