Noisy balance shaft.

My V40 T5 (Polestar software) is five years old travelled 18ooo miles with an oil change every six months. Main dealer maintained (Lookers) with Volvo's extended warranty. They now tell me that there is a noise from the engine balance shaft at approx. 2,200 rpm. They quoted me £1,000 to fix it. I asked if this came under warranty but the dreaded lock-down came into effect so no reply to date.

I did not know that these four cylinder engines had a balance shaft, so I would welcome any advice as to the seriousness of this noise, and as to whether or not such a problem should be expected at such a low mileage.

Many thanks

Is it a VEA engine?

It is a known problem on VEA engines and the balance shaft modules have been modified in production.

There is a long topic on the issue on a Swedish forum, with some interesting photos of balance shaft damage and stories of the modules having been replaced more than once under warranty towards the end of the thread.

It's in Swedish, but if you use the translation facility on the Chrome browser (or similar) it's quite readable in English and may give you some ammunition to press Volvo for at least a contribution.

This may also be of interest, including the audio files.

Just to say "Thank you" for your info. I approached Volvo UK and they have agreed to carry out the remedial work under their extended warranty.

Quite a common fault whining noise...as long as they use dial gauges to set shafts up so that they aren’t too tight and noise comes back need to use DT gauge 🙏🏻
