aw55-50 v aw50-42
hi all
my gearbox broken. my car is a 1999 V70 2.5T petrol with a AW50-42 gearbox. so two questions: 1, can i put any AW50-42 box back in? are the bell houses the same on a 2.0, 2.5 diesel, 2.3 T5 and gear ratios? 2. can i replace with a AW55-50 box? i know will need things like the gear shifter and gearbox ecu. but is it a replaceable option without major surgery. any help much appreciated David |
Hello there glad to know I'm not on my own with the 5 Speed auto.
You can't change it to a 4 Speed auto. You cannot just change to manual as it's ME7 system. Why not fix the auto ? I'm in middle of fixing mine...suffering from flares and smashing into gear or not going into gear at all. |
On the 1999 V70 with the AW50-42 the bell housing used on the diesel is different to the petrol engined one.
Both bell housings have the same 'gearbox proper' mounting bolt layout. I believe there can be different final drive ratios too. Early AW50-42 gearboxes have some different types of sensors though case threads and drillings are the same. With determination and research these problems can usually be overcome - the replacement gearbox I fitted in my V70 diesel came from a C70 petrol. I did a thread on here 2 - 3 years ago but only actually changed the gearbox after initially trying to repair the original box - so the swapout is later in the thread. Colin |

Thanks all.
If i knew where to buy bits for box might give it a go. Basicall a drive shaft fell out of box and i believe the end of the driveshaft has burred over the splines in the diff unit. i know its not the driveshaft as i filesd the end down to test it. so what i need is one part of a diff. not interested in putting a manual in just everything else on car good. Local gearbox garage wants £2700 for a recon box. ooouuuch well thanks for your replies David |
Find a scrap box and get diff out. Bit of a task.
